Meet Trailblazer Jane Huh

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jane Huh.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I used to work a 9-to-5 job in the fashion industry for years and flowers happened to find me. I come from an immigrant family and seeing my dad run his business with so much pride inspired me when I grew up. During my time at my corporate job, I felt stagnant and needed a creative outlet. I initially started baking for fun but quickly realized that wasn’t for me since I was “tasting” a bit too much of what I was making! Looking for other creative outlets, I stumbled on floral arranging and picked up blooms from the flower market. Something just went off in my brain and I instantly fell in love with the floral design. I started an Instagram account just to post the floral arrangements I made for fun but people started reaching out to hire me for their special events and weddings. I pursued this little side hustle part-time but decided to throw myself in full-time. I’m so proud and grateful to say I own a small business that has allowed me to be a part of people’s wonderful events in their lives.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are definitely struggles in being a creative entrepreneur/small business owner. There are days of where I feel like I’m floating on cloud nine and days when all I can think of are the struggles in this industry. I think acknowledging that there are ups and downs when you’re self-employed is a very important idea to understand. As long as you’re doing something you love and work hard, you’ll be fine!

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am primarily a wedding florist in the southern California area! I do other special or corporate events but weddings are my focus. My floral style has a whimsical feel but is also classic and romantic. My approach to flowers has always been more relaxed and down-to-earth. For my couples, their wedding day is the first time they are spending so much on florals. To help during the stressful process of wedding planning, I want to make discussing flowers fun! I love getting to know my couples and collaborating on a design we’ll love equally together!

So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
The wedding industry is particularly a great field for women. I have worked with a majority of women-run business who understand what clients want in terms of design for their wedding day. There are so many components to a wedding day that women can find themselves pursuing in areas like calligraphy, photography, or wedding planning!
