Today we’d like to introduce you to Caprice Mitchell.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m originally from Dallas, Texas raised separately by my mother and father I lived there all my life up until after I graduated high school, I’ve always known that I wanted to do something on the more creative and artistic side, it started with me being obsessed with Project Runway and wanting to become a fashion designer that’s what I had my mind set on as a child and nobody could tell me otherwise until I actually started taking classes and soon realized that maybe I wasn’t cut out for that side of the fashion industry. In high school I found a passion in dance, I did it day in and day out, was in multiple dance groups all throughout high school, and when I got home I still never stopped moving and creating, although dancing was one of my passions I found it to only be a hobby to me and not something I really wanted to take all the way, not knowing that it would lead me to my true passion and career choice, I was a background dancer in my high schools rendition of Cinderella , I unexpectedly helped almost all the girls get into hair and makeup and it was the most fun that I’d ever had the fast paced energy and being able to play with different skin tones and faces it was all very overwhelming in a good way, I wore makeup all the time and would get compliments on it but I never thought of it as something that I was actually interested in until after that, soon I started to practice different looks on myself and taught myself what I could in order to achieve desired looks from what inspired me. I loved the fact that I could completely change the features of my face, make myself look more angelic, or the total opposite, I soon started to look into school to further my knowledge in makeup, although I was self-taught I knew that I could gain more knowledge learning different things from actual professionals. Moving to Los Angeles was a no brainer for me I always loved it there and felt like it was a place where I could fit in, I also knew that it would be easier to form a freelance career and network with a lot more people who knew the industry. After graduation I had to hold off for a while until I was able to come up with the money for school and a place to live that was nothing new to me and I was willing to do whatever it took, our family didn’t have much but thankfully I had a mother who believed in my career and got two jobs in order to help me get where I knew I needed to be. Soon after I moved to LA and after a year of learning from industry professionals and studying different techniques in beauty all the way to special effects I graduated and went straight into building my portfolio and into my freelance career. I’ve done gigs that range from fashion/editorial photo shoots, fashion shows, short films, and music videos. I never knew that I was gonna call LA my home and also build a career here. Hopefully, I can continue to turn this dream into a full-time career and give back not only my friends and family who supported me in this journey but everyday people who I come in contact with and who inspire me.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road there was a lot of headaches and hardships that went on but who doesn’t go through those things, to me it’s all about how you take those hardships and turn it into your platform. I knew weren’t the most privileged family at times, my mother had to do a lot of things on her own she had to feed 3 children, work and also somehow battle her own personal happenings, I owe a lot of who I am today and how hard I push towards success to her because she deserves the world and I watched her go through things wishing that I could take that pain from her, but she somehow always made things work, I wouldn’t be living in LA if it wasn’t without her.
I never filed myself under pretty I never felt like I deserved a lot of the positive things that came to me I battled a lot with myself and my insecurities feeling like I wasn’t enough and always feeling like I needed the opinions of others in order to feel valid a lot of that stemmed from negative things that happened to me that I didn’t really know how to channel that energy and I became someone that I hated, it held me back and I missed out on a lot of things and pushed certain people away that I needed . I still deal with those things today but I’ve learned that it’s not about what you went through it’s about how you push through it and channel that energy into something that your passionate about and will aid you in the healing process.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Pri Makeup Artistry – what should we know?
Pri Makeup Artistry is my freelancing makeup business name. I enjoy helping men and women look and feel their best and enhancing the things that make them beautiful or even completely transforming someone from their actual appearance. I specialize in beauty, high fashion, television, body paint, and special effects but I’m mostly known for my beauty/ high fashion looks. I’m most proud of being multiverse in different areas of makeup although I love my beauty ,I also feel it’s important to branch out and learn other aspects of makeup i.e. special effects and body paint techniques and applications, different clients want different things and who knows some people might want to mesh two worlds together. Knowing more than what you favor can open up more career opportunities. I think what sets me apart is I don’t look at gigs as really a job more so an experience, I see myself as a person who is there to use my talents to help the clients turn what they picture in their head and transferring it into their reality I really enjoy just being there for them and making their experiences with me a positive and uplifting one.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My mother deserves a lot of that credit, I wouldn’t be here without her hard work and love she’s why I work so hard every day and approach certain things a certain way, I can always go to her whenever I need something and she’ll help me make it happen. My friends and family for supporting me and being around since day one. I’m so blessed to have so many people who believe in my art and my talent, so many that I’d be here all day naming every single person it’s just overwhelming the amount of support I receive. My Black on Paper crew for hyping me up appreciating my work, My father and aunt for their undying support I thank them for picking me up anytime I feel like I can’t do something a lot of my friends creatives and in the entertainment business so they understand how hard it is to move around and stand out and I appreciate them for always thinking about me anytime that they see an opportunity for me. All the people who’ve been supporting me in the background and cheering me on whether it’s all the way from Texas through a simple positive message or here in Los Angeles just putting in good words and sending work my way. I’m grateful to have had nothing but amazing clients who I’m comfortable with and I’m thankful for, for putting their trust in me to bring their visions to life. My friends and family are who I work so hard for, the only thing I love more than makeup is putting smiles on their faces and making sure they know that I appreciate them for just being such an uplifting presence and leaving a forever mark on me.
