Today we’d like to introduce you to Dulce Dagda.
Dulce, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I believe that there is not a single vocation in life there’re several. I studied Communication and Journalism in the university, but little by little, I have discovered that nutrition and fitness have to be part of my life because I enjoy taking care of myself and sharing with my audience what also help me and what don’t. I love to share knowledge and I do it with a lot of passion.
I started working in television as a reporter of art and culture in Mexico, but after that, I was taking a turn more towards what was orienting me, and finally, I decided to study Nutrition Coaching.
The wellness mindset has always been part of my life since I was a child, I was passionate about living healthy because I knew that if you were strong and healthy you can travel the world and live many wonderful experiences. If you do not take care of your health, you will not have the opportunity to have enough energy to do everything that you like.
Nowadays, I have a YouTube channel that has more than 66K subscribers and a blog named La Matrushka hosted on lamatrushka.com and an Instagram account with 18K. I also work 1-on-1 with clients to help them to improve their habits and overall health designing personalized nutrition plans.
I also keep my Journalist career every time I have the opportunity to interview celebrities and interesting people, like actors, directors, producers, etc. But also at the end of the interview, I always drive the direction to their lifestyles, what they do, how they eat and what type of excessive they do.
What encouraged me to create my blog is mainly being able to share practical tips with more people and connect with people anywhere in the world. I have always liked to write and speak in front of the camera, but the television seemed to me in some way fake; YouTube or writing for my blog is like talking to a friend, it’s genuine, you can be just you and that’s what finally interests the audience, that can identify and connect with you.
Has it been a smooth road?
It is not easy to change careers and admit that you want to dedicate yourself to something else. I think you do not have to give up to anything if you know how to integrate both parts, in my case, I have combined the fitness area with journalism in my YouTube channel and social media because you need production skills and screenwriting to make your own channel and luckily I already had them.
But if you choose to put aside what you have done for a long time, it’s ok, I think it is better to start doing what you really love no matter how old you are or when you do it. If you are not happy with something, you have to find a way to do that makes you happy.
Another obstacle that I found when I came to live in Los Angeles is that the language of my content in Spanish. There is a very important Latino population in this city but the official language is English, so brands often do not want to sponsor me or work with me for being Latina and that is something that hurts me. Also, my whole family lives in Mexico, here I am, alone with my husband and starting from scratch in a city as big as Los Angeles is not easy. Doing networking is extremely important as well as highlighting your value as a Latina woman and connecting with other women like you.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I generate content for my audience on my blog, YouTube channel and Instagram, I encourage people to live a healthy lifestyle, I am focused on both the exterior and the interior in feeling beautiful inside and out. I like to share exercise routines, healthy recipes, tips to improve your skin, but also motivational tips to achieve your goals and organize your life.
I work with clients 101 online and in person, I create personalized nutrition plans according to help them reach their goals. I’m also working with Latino elderly population to teach them how to improve their habits and overall health, I believe this has been one of the most fulfilling jobs I ever had in my life.
And I also created Workbook “Tu Mejor Año,” where I teach people how to achieve their goals and dreams. My workbook is for people who want to stay motivated and inspired, to learn from your past mistakes, clarifying what you really want in life. In summary, I will motivate you to start working on making your dreams a reality. Here’s the link http://www.lamatrushka.com/workbook.
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
There is a growing awareness that being a feminist does not mean being more or better than men, is having the same rights and the same obligations. But it is a fact that there is still discrimination for the simple fact that you are a woman. Sometimes, people do not believe that you can do things on your own and that you always need help, we have to keep working hard to show that we can be as successful as any man.
Being a minority is not easy, in my case being a woman, Mexican living in another country has been difficult but the only way to avoid discrimination is by working hard and showing that work.
