Life and Work with Angel Laketa Moore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angel Laketa Moore.

Angel, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
After receiving my Masters of Fine Arts from the University of California, Irvine, I relocated to Los Angeles, CA to pursue my acting career. I was blessed to land my first major role in ER soon after moving. This was my introduction to being a professional television actress. During my 3rd year on the show, which also happened to be the last season of the series, I became pregnant with my first son. Life as a pregnant actress proved to be difficult, to say the least. So, I turned my creative energy towards online content. I began posting weekly pregnancy updates on YouTube as a way to connect my new journey into motherhood with my passion for entertaining. Shortly after having my son, I branched off into stand up comedy. Being a stand-up comedian, helped me see myself not just as a performer but as a writer as well. I used all of my training, professional and life experiences to create my brand That Chick Angel. That Chick Angel is where comedy, motherhood, and inspiration intersect. I have created varies series such as Mommy Confessions, a no-hold bars couch conversation between me and my guest on motherhood and life, Maternity Leave, a scripted comedic web-series about a mother of twins finding her way back to her career, and Is This Going To Cause An Argument, a bi-weekly podcast between my husband and myself.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While it can sometimes be difficult to convince nay-sayers of your ability and that your dreams have any value, that is NOT the true challenge. The real challenge is convincing yourself that your ability and dreams have value. I have sold myself short several times in my journey based on what I thought I needed to be or have in order to achieve my goals. I told myself, I had to choose between being a mother or being an actress. It wasn’t until I became pregnant with my 4th child, that I realized, no one else was putting those thoughts in my head but MYSELF. I now purposefully speak “life” into my ideas. I try to catch my negative thoughts before they hit my mouth. I know I must be my biggest cheerleader and if others decide to cheer along, GREAT, if not, it doesn’t matter, because I AM ENOUGH.

Please tell us about That Chick Angel.
I love to make people laugh! It makes me feel so good to see comments that are just full of the laughing emoji. I specialize in being a truth teller through the lens of humor. I think what makes my brand unique is that I am very clear on WHO I AM. I have never been confused about that. This is infused into all of my content. I think that allows my viewers to get to know me and know that they can’t get “me” anywhere else.

There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that a lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
I think getting to know a person before asking them to mentor or partner with you is very important. I enjoy A LOT of women’s work in my genre but that doesn’t mean we would be productive working together. The people that I consider to be my mentors, I trust whole-heartedly. It doesn’t matter if they have 100K followers or over 1 million, I want to make sure I can trust their advice to be in my best interest. As far as networking is concerned, attend events and make introductions. Networking is not the time to be shy. Say hello, and spring up a conversation. Not every interaction will blossom into a promising business relationship but great referrals can come from networking.
