Meet Kristy Messer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristy Messer.

Kristy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
After participating in a couple of city-wide scavenger hunts a decade ago, I couldn’t forget the experience. As a long time runner, I loved taking part in road races. Scavenger hunts combined the “race” element with an exploration of the city. Also, working with teams created a team spirit, and afterwards–celebrating with other teams created a sense of community. Those three elements: outdoor exercise, exploring the city from a new perspective & team/community building inspired me to create a scavenger hunt company.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I don’t think starting a business is ever a perfectly smooth road! For four years, I operated the business while also working a full-time job. You can imagine the time crunches I was under–wanting to give my clients the best possible service, while also knowing that 40 hours of my week were spent focusing elsewhere. Now that I am able to put more time into the business, it has alleviated that stress. It is true that you get back what you put in. I always thought it was clever marketing or PR that built a business, but I have found for myself that building a business “grassroots” style has been most successful. When I put my time and focus on leading successful events for clients, the work continues to grow.

Please tell us about Entertaining Adventure.
Entertaining Adventure is an L.A. based “boutique” scavenger hunt company that creates custom events for all ages. We specialize in scavenger hunts (we’ve done hundreds), but we’ve also created custom Game Nights and Field Days for companies and parties.

No two events are alike. Our main purpose is to create an engaging, fun event for our client and participants, and we work alongside them to make this happen. We’ve done hunts in neighborhoods, shopping districts, art districts, parks, museums–in Hollywood, Santa Monica, Culver City, Downtown Los Angeles, Venice, Calabasas, Pacific Palisades, Beverly Hills, Pasadena, Griffith Park…the list goes on!

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I don’t know if there is anything I would’ve done differently. I had no experience in starting a business, so every mistake I made ended up shaping my business for the better. If anything, I would’ve started much sooner. I sat around and talked about it for years before making it a reality.
