Life and Work with Robyn King

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robyn King.

Robyn, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Robyn King, the brand, was born in the spring of 2018. I moved to LA with my husband about five years ago. We became pregnant with our first son and I quickly decided that I needed to take some time off and be fully present for my family in those early years of motherhood. That time off for motherhood really changed me, however, and gave me a huge amount of confidence and inspiration and eventually led me to launch my own brand. I started making clothing for myself after I had my second son, from deadstock linen fabric that I found in the garment district in LA. It was loose and flowy and quickly became popular among my amazing group of mom friends. I put together a really small collection, did a small production and then launched it myself online. Somehow, some way, people found the clothes online and bought them. It was incredible. Now, here I am, about to launch a second collection, this time a little more modern, a little more tailored. It’s been about two years since I had my second baby so I’m moving into a more structured silhouette that celebrates the effortless luxury of the LA woman. All of our sourcing and manufacturing is done here LA: localism plays a very important part in my process. We have an incredibly creative community of makers here in LA and the people making the clothing are a huge part of the story. I am all about lifting that veil.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t really been smooth, in fact, it’s been very challenging! The fashion industry is very tough and competitive. You need to be determined and have some serious grit to run a clothing company. The biggest struggle has been finding the right humans to join my team: the fabric vendors, the pattern-makers, the sewers: they are all a crucial part of the team. My advice to newcomers is this: stay true to your vision, grow organically, trust your gut, speak your truth, work smarter.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I design clothing for women. I work with the highest quality natural fibers and manufacture my clothing here in Los Angeles in the most sustainable way possible. Our designs are timeless and versatile and celebrate the beauty of real life the way you live it. I am so proud that we make everything here in LA. There is a thriving garment industry here, full of talented craftspeople and I am so excited to be a part of it. What sets my brand apart from others is quality: our clothing is made to last for years and years.

What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
Be open-hearted, kind and honest in all you do and the right people will find you.
