Meet Trailblazer Nicole Doiron

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Doiron.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Nicole. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a second generation Filipino-American photographer and cinematographer from California. My mother, born in Cebu, raised me to create and appreciate art and encouraged me to expand my horizons by taking trips out of the country every year. The first time I was involved in an art community was when I joined a local theatre group in elementary school and I performed and worked on stage for over seven years. In high school, I started taking friends headshots and developed my own photography business. When I had to decide on what I would study in college, my love for storytelling and visual art led me to Chapman University where I wrote and shot various web series and short films. Over the past six months, I have been living in East Hollywood and working at Refinery29 shooting and creating videos for their online website and YouTube channel.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think that anytime you try and work in the arts it’s going to be challenging. My main challenge is that I want to be a documentary filmmaker and that there isn’t one correct route to get there. When you want to be a doctor or a lawyer, there is a certain path that leads you to your final goal; with filmmaking, there is no right or wrong. I have to remind myself every day that what I’m doing is because of my love for films. I think my main piece of advice for young men or women wanting to go into the arts is that if you don’t get excited to finish a painting, awe-inspired by a beautifully written script, fall in love with a lighting setup, or emotional when everything that you’ve put together turns out the way you’ve planned then you’re in the wrong field because this is a lot of work!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Nicole Doiron Photography – what should we know?
My main business has been my photography company I’ve run over the past six years, Nicole Doiron Photography. I take headshots and portraits on film and digital and try to capture the unedited beauty of my clients.

What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
You can achieve anything you set your mind to. You just have to believe that you can, have the passion for your art, and work through anything that stands in your way.
