Today we’d like to introduce you to Jim Jordan.
Growing up as a skater and surfer in sunny, Southern California, Jim Jordan spent his high school days scouting models and finding the next great faces of the coming generation.
With a passion for beauty and styling, Jim quickly became a highly respected hair and makeup artist, traveling the world and working with the biggest actors, actresses, and supermodels of the time, such as Cindy Crawford, Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren, Farrah Fawcett, etc. He worked with the worlds best photographers such as Herb Ritts, Helmut Newton, Peter Lindehberg to name a few.
After many years of behind the scenes experience as a makeup and hair artist, Jim picked up a camera and immediately developed his own unique style as a photographer. Jim now shoots some of the top models in the world and shoots for clients such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, Elle, Marie Claire, etc.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
“There were always obstacles and struggles. First of all, I’m not the most technical photographer, so the challenge I faced was to learn the technical aspect of photography, such as power packs, light meters, strobes, and complex cameras. It was hard for me to become accustomed to using all of this equipment as well as becoming comfortable with it being a part of my process.”
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
“I have a multifaceted company. Jim Jordan Photography was the first company I started. I’m a celebrity fashion advertising photographer. I had agents in New York and LA for many years in the beginning, but I eventually became business savvy.
I decided to leave my agents in order to open my own production company called White Cross Productions. I hired a team of producers, photo agents, and administrative help. My company then grew at a rapid pace, as we shot major advertising campaigns and directed a multitude of television commercials.
But I then came to a place in my career where I wanted to go back to my roots, I wanted to help people. When I was a kid, I used to go around to all the schools discovering models. But, once my career took off, I didn’t have as much time to scout models and talent. But I wanted to get back to that place, fostering girls and guys that I knew could be top models.
So, I opened another division of my company, called White Cross Management. As of today, I have approximately 50 men and women models and have discovered several of the biggest models of the generation. Our company is based in Calabasas, CA, and we are continually growing and expanding.
Now, I am entering the television and motion picture space, as I work on writing a documentary about my journey, my life, and my adventures.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
The role of bad luck is that I never had a mentor. I never had a role model or a sort of road map of how to get into the business that I felt I was called to be in.
