Today we’d like to introduce you to Hope Simpson and Drew Murray.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Drew and I met in Seattle in 2011. There was a quick connection between us, and most of it was around music. We had a lot of success in Seattle, but eventually realized we had stopped evolving and needed a serious change. We moved to LA in the end of 2016 and buried ourselves in Ever So Android.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve found that life and music are incredibly intertwined- whatever lesson I seem to be learning out in the world is coming out in the songs we write, shows we play and the nature of being an artist. So no, it’s not smooth. We’re constantly being challenged and pushed to be better than we were before in every aspect of this journey.
But when things gel and connect, it’s the most amazing experience. Nothing compares. Starting over from scratch in LA was difficult, deciding to pursue music full time, releasing a full length to end up pulling it because it wasn’t us, adding and subtracting band members, realizing that all our inaction was fear. There are a million difficulties.
Honestly, it can be debilitating. But, we’ve come to love this project so much that even with all the challenges in the world it’s still worth it.
Ever So Android – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I sing in Ever So Android. Drew plays guitar live and is pretty much 100% responsible for all of the instrumentation/production. We go back and forth when it comes to lyrics and melodies. I’d say we’re a pretty amazing team- both of us seem to pick up where the other leaves off.
I’m most proud of our ability to evolve and admit when we can be better. I’m starting to realize we thrive in change.
I think what sets us apart is there’s no separation for us. We cut our hair in the bathroom, write songs constantly in our home studio, we get really strange when we don’t play shows or practice. This is exactly who we are, and Ever So Android is the embodiment of that.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Honestly, there have been so many proud moments. I know that’s corny to say, but it’s so true. From selling out our first show (The Crocodile in Seattle) to finishing a song the other night. One has more adrenaline, but they give a similar satisfaction of “Fuck yeah, we did that.”
