Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Fonnegra.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My passion for the beauty industry started when I was in middle school. I was always the friend that everyone came to for hairstyles and makeup when we had dances and all that fun stuff. I knew right away that I wanted to attend Cosmetology School right out of high school, so I went for it. After graduating and getting my license, I was in a bit of a limbo because I wasn’t enjoying doing hair as much as I thought I would. Cut and Color just wasn’t my thing!
I began working in an office full time at that point wondering if I would ever change my mind about doing hair at a salon. Fast forward six years and I started dabbling into makeup and doing some friends for holidays and weddings. I really enjoyed the creative aspect and knew that it was for me! I started hustling on the weekends working for multiple Bridal Beauty teams doing hair and makeup which gave me enough experience to venture out on my own. It has brought me such joy to finally find my niche and to be able to do something I love while being my own boss!
Has it been a smooth road?
Of course not! Every career path has its challenges. I personally struggled with the thought of changing my career so late in my twenties. I have always been extremely independent. I had an established job as an office manager with benefits, and I was also a homeowner. I was so bored with my career path, but I was also so used to the stability of income. Would I be able to freelance and make the same or more? At first definitely not. I had to start while working a full-time job.
For about three years, I would work seven days a week more often than not. I felt like I was always missing out on things. I had no time for friends and family. I would miss tons of special moments and events that I felt bad about. I did not have a healthy balance of self-care it was just all work all the time. I really had to learn that it’s OK to say no. I still struggle with saying no and making time for myself.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Amanda Rae Beauty story. Tell us more about the business.
The main portion of my beauty business resides in the Wedding Industry, I provide mobile Hair and Makeup services for Bridal Parties throughout Southern California, and I also have a studio in Santa Clarita where I provide permanent makeup services.
I really think what sets me apart as an artist is my docile personality. I really try to be as flexible and accommodating as I can for my clients. I am always kind, respectful, patient and understanding of their time and needs, I really enjoy getting to know my clients on a personal level and sometimes even develop friendships. It’s all about having a uniquely enjoyable experience with each client.
I am most proud of myself for taking the risks I did so that I am able to do what I love today! It’s been very challenging but rewarding, and I really didn’t think I had it in me to get this far. I look forward to seeing what the future holds!
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I definitely see the Bridal Beauty Industry growing over the years. Trends are always changing, but I enjoy the change and challenges we face every year.
