Today we’d like to introduce you to Chip Herwegh.
Chip Herwegh is a native Angelino and South Bay local. Most of my career has been as a union prop maker (set builder), then moving on to becoming a furniture maker, and now focusing on being an artist. I love California, the history, the myth, the architecture, the artists and the art they make. My art combines these elements in a way that draws us together as a tribe.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Looking back, my story seems like a progression of my skills and interests, bringing me to where I am today. As I have moved along in my life, I have set harder and harder goals. Now my biggest struggle is to manifest my own ideas and designs into reality. I have spent my youth building other people’s art. Now I have to pull the ideas out of my head, get them on paper, and then build them all myself.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
There are so many moments that confirm I have made the best decisions on how to live my life. The first time I went to the movies and saw something I built on the big screen. The first time I hung a piece of my art in someone’s house. Every time I get to share my workshop with someone, they get to see a little bit of who I am.
