Check out Daisy Noemi’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daisy Noemi.

Daisy, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I was a late bloomer creatively speaking. I didn’t really get into art and photography until my early 20s. Since then I have fallen deeply in love with photography (especially film) and everything art related. I decided to refine my photography skills by enrolling in the Santa Monica College photography program.

While I was doing the photo program, I heard about the first ever Los Angeles Zine Fest accepting applications. I applied and was able to participate as a vendor. That year, I fell in love with zines and the zine community. Because SMC was strictly a commercial photo program, I used zines as an outlet for my film photography which was typically more artsy fartsy.

I made photo and illustration zines to share with L.A. Zine Fest attendees for a few years before I was invited to help organize the fest itself. This manifested because I volunteered a whole lot and essentially involved myself every chance I got. I’ve now been on the organizing team for almost six years and I love it so so much. It is a lot of work but very rewarding because I am able to play a moving part in our DIY-zine-art Los Angeles community.

I still shoot photography and in fact, I’m working on strengthening my freelance photography career. Nothing is more difficult than being your own boss so I’m always working on finding a balance between my photography, passion projects like L.A. Zine fest, and of course, getting rest.

Through organizing, I have also found a deep appreciation for public works and so my next move is organizing a creative conference for womxn of color.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Photography brings me so much joy! I really love being able to catch all the in-between moments in our day-to-day lives. I like to consider myself my family’s and friend’s personal documentarian. I tend to photograph the same landscapes to catch the evolution of time. I photograph people because I love connecting with new folks. We all have such wonderful stories to share each other.

I make zines to find and connect with other creatives. Zines remind me that the community we crave is out there, we simply have to find it or create it if it doesn’t exist.

With the creative conference, I hope to create a more accessible event for those that might miss out an opportunity like this due to financial hardship since most I have seen and attended have an admission fee that is a few hundred bucks. It’s really important for me to be able to see other individuals like myself in networks meant to inspire and nurture their respective careers.

I also started a podcast to share my experience as a woman of color in the freelance photography world. This podcast is definitely a work in progress but my hope is to remind other woc that we are not alone on our journeys to success.

How can artists connect with other artists?
For all the time you spend working on your craft, remember to make time for yourself, for fun, for meeting strangers, for dancing. I have used the internet to find other female photographers to connect with, too.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
My photography website can be seen here: http://daisynoemi.com/. If you are interested in booking a session, feel free to contact me via the contact form on my website.

The website for the creative conference I’m putting together is currently under construction. If anyone is interested in learning more and/or participating feel free to email me at: [email protected].

I share my most recent work on my IG, @daisynoemiphoto.
