Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassie Zhang.
Cassie, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I grew up in Fremont, California and I’ve been drawing and painting since I was a toddler. Fortunately my parents let me take art classes almost my entire life, all the way through college. They had let me major in art because, according to them, it’s the only thing that I’ve done consistently since I was a child. I attended ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena from 2011-2015 and earned a BFA in Illustration. I hadn’t decided that I would be an artist until I applied to school. Up until then I thought that I was going to be a graphic designer or a photojournalist, both of which are not all that different from illustration since they’re both visual. I’ve always had a love and appreciation for visual art and design.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My intention is to create delightful surprises by designing visual languages that I have never seen before. As a result my practice requires a lot of research and experimentation. I don’t know if it’s possible to create something completely original, although it’s really fun to try. Currently my work is a mixture of representational and abstract art with a heavy focus on nature and plants. My mediums lately have been mural paintings and digital paintings on my iPad.
What responsibility, if any, do you think artists have to help alleviate problems faced by others? Has your art been affected by issues that you are concerned about?
Artists are culture creators. We influence the way people relate to the world and how they experience it, therefore impacting the actions that they take. Currently my role is to contribute pure joy. It’s a rare and invaluable thing.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
They can visit my website or Instagram, and share it with others if they feel inspired to do so.
