Meet Venice Beach Photographer: Franz Steiner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Franz Steiner.

Franz, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Duesseldorf, Germany. My dad is an advertising man who turned photographer. So I grew up around the creative Industry. At age 20 I moved to Berlin to study animation and visual effects at a film school.

After I finished my diploma I created a series of photography/CGI crossovers featuring pretty girls and robots in every day life scenes. Those images are still best sellers on Getty Images 10 years later. I then made my way to Los Angeles via NYC. The company I’m running today with my wife Sally is a design studio that is focused on photography infused by her experience in beauty and makeup as well as my post production background. We are currently focusing on active lifestyle photography portraying the most interesting athletes and influencers living and visiting southern California.

Has it been a smooth road?
I think finding your own style and your own voice as a creative seems to be a key to success. That doesn’t always come easy when you are trying to be reasonable and balance commercial projects with your own creative expression.

What role has luck had in your life and career?
I guess the situation you are born is luck ( or bad luck ). The fact that I haven’t been struck by any major setbacks in life I would consider luck too. There were a few key moments in my career but that would fall into the category ” preparation meets opportunity “.

Do you feel like there are certain traits that increase the likelihood of success?
Fairly strong belief in talent. At least in certain areas. I’m also pretty aware of my “struggles “. I have to think that my optimism usually wins over my doubts so that keeps me going. I feel this has been given to me by my parents who did a very solid job.

What do you love about our city and what do you dislike?
The sunny optimistic vibe suits my personality. The idea that everything is possible in a city like LA is also quite inspiring. I don’t like the size of it and how difficult it is to get out without being stuck in traffic. I don’t like that you can’t afford to do by a house anymore without being a million… excuse me , billionaire.
