Meet Joe Fernandez of Joymode

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe Fernandez.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Joe. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
In 2005, I moved from LA to NYC, where I met my wife. When we moved in together, our apartment was so small that whenever we bought something we had to get rid of something.

I hated that our life was artificially constrained by what we didn’t own, which led me to become really obsessed with the idea of access over ownership. I spent a year working on the idea but never really got anywhere solid. It lingered in my mind for ten years, until 2015 when I finally started Joymode.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In 2005, the ubiquitous “sharing economy” we know today just didn’t exist. Uber, Airbnb, Rent the Runway, and many other household names were nowhere near conception, let alone adoption. There weren’t even mobile apps!

When I was first playing around with the notion of a service that provided products you didn’t need to own, but still got to use for experiences, I spent a year feeling like I was running into a brick wall with every idea. I basically had to take a 10-year break from the concept.

Thankfully, the cultural shift towards people caring more about experiences over ownership, combined with the development of a robust sharing economy, now make this the right time to build Joymode.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Joymode – what should we know?
Joymode helps you make the most of your time, money and space. We inspire you with creative ideas that seamlessly fit into your lifestyle and lend you the products you need to make them happen.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I suppose I have a knack for finding the best people for the job. Building a successful company rooted in an idea that’s essentially never been done before isn’t done in a vacuum –– it’s all about finding the right people and building a strong team to accomplish your goals.
