Today we’d like to introduce you to Dalon Holland.
Dalon, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
My story, woo. My story sounds super cliche, when I think about it and even more so out loud!
I was born and raised in Michigan, in and around Detroit. I can remember being young and having a really active imagination; superheroes and the power rangers were some of my favorite things. As a kid I remember seeing my first blooper reel, (I can’t recall what it was from), but that’s when I realized that all the amazing things I saw on TV were really just people pretending and having an amazing time doing so. That’s when I caught the acting bug! I started with summer classes, and it only furthered my interest.
By the time I got through high school and started college, I had chosen a “safe” career path, but never lost the love for acting. When I moved out to LA, it was to pursue 3D animation cause it was “safe.” I was lucky enough to have close family and a mom that encouraged me to do what I wanted, rather than what was “safe.” So I left animation and jumped into my love without a net. That’s the short version!
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
My Art is acting, performing, entertaining. I act and perform because I love it. Acting gives me a feeling like I don’t get anywhere else. The best way that I can explain what it feels like is, electric; It brings my imagination, creativity, and energy together into one thing.
I act because it makes me feel alive and because it’s a way to connect with and affect people. When people watch films, plays or TV, it’s to be entertained; rather it’s a horror film, a comedy, or a drama, they are entertained for that period of time and can leave any worries or issues behind. If someone feels bad watching the right performance can make their day brighter, or amaze them with things they could never see in real life. I don’t like to see people in bad funk! If I can do what I love and at the same time affect people in a positive way, I’m happy.
When taking in my art, I hope that people can find an escape from what ails or take an adventure to somewhere fantastic. I’d also like people to know I’m following my dream, and that it only takes a step for them to follow theirs as well. I want them to know that the performance comes from the love of entertaining.
What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
As an artist, I define success as being able to make a living off of and continue pursuing your dream or dreams. As far as essentials go, I believe that being yourself is 100% essential because it keeps you living/following your own dreams instead of someone else’s.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
As of now, people can see a list of the projects I’ve been a part of on IMDb. One of my most recent roles has been playing Duane Porter on Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger. Cloak and Dagger currently show on Freeform and the entire first season is on Hulu for streaming.
As far as supporting my work and also getting a view or my life and upcoming projects, I can be found on social media like Instagram @dalonjholland on facebook as Dalon J Holland and twitter @dalonolad. I’m most active on IG sharing quick bits from my daily life, photos, and some interviews.
