Meet Anahita Skye

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anahita Skye.

Anahita, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My journey as a songwriter and artist began the day I picked up the guitar.   I was not one of those singers who came out the womb singing, but rather discovered it by accident when I started learning to play guitar at fourteen. Along the way, I discovered I had a voice and a natural talent for songwriting and creating melody. The instrument was my light, opening places inside me I didn’t know were there.

Quickly, I started performing songs I had written in local venues and coffee shops. By 16, I had enough songs to record an EP. My friend Darren encouraged me to record an EP and connected me with a studio, engineer and some session musicians.

I surprised my parents with my first EP of original songs as a Christmas gift, they were delighted! I decided to take music seriously and study classical guitar in my undergrad. I was part of the Fullerton Guitar Orchestra and underwent rigorous training as a classical musician.

During this time, I continued to write and record the music I was writing as an artist. I was living in Orange County at the time, driving back and forth to LA to play shows. After one of my residencies, I met my producer, Greg Cortez who loved my music and offered to produce my next EP at New Monkey Studio.

Since then, I have been living in LA and have released 4 EPs. Since coming out to LA, I have collaborated and written with numerous songwriters, producers, and DJs; had my songs placed in film and television, gained radio play and toured. I am currently working on my 5th EP, which I’m so excited about, entitled “Gold”!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh gosh, no! There have been so many highs and lows along the way. My struggle has been finding my voice, softening my inner critic and to stop trying to please everyone.

As an artist, it’s important to try new things, paint with new colors and genres, take risks, work with new people, say yes to things, and that has all been part of my journey. I’ve learned and grown so much from that.

Then there comes a point where you take these experiences, be okay with turning off the need to try to please everyone and be authentically yourself. I feel like I have finally reached that place, but it’s been a long road to get here.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I am an artist, singer, songwriter and guitar player. My intention in this world is to be ok with myself and be proud that I am unique, something that I struggled with growing up in an immigrant family in a culturally homogeneous environment.

I want to be a role model to the kids who felt similar to me growing up as an outsider. To embrace these differences and celebrate them. I also hope to continue to express these differences through sound.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Detaching myself from outcomes or expectations, because being an artist is a journey and a process… and it took me a long time to realize this.

Also, the most important thing I try to remember is that I have this one precious life- to have fun, enjoy special moments and the small successes along the way.
