Today we’d like to introduce you to Raffael Dickreuter.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Raffael. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I was originally born in Switzerland and move to Los Angeles 13 years ago. For about ten years, I worked in virtual production on films such as Man of Steel, Avengers 2, The Martian and Terminator Salvation.
Using 3d animation technology, I designed action sequences such as car chases and plane crashes to previsualize them before they are shot on set. The amount of time that goes into making a big action film is tremendous which sometimes goes forgotten to the viewer who can experience it in two hours.
Two years ago, I founded Superba AR to focus on Augmented Reality. I believe it will profoundly change many industries, not only entertainment but education, design, planning, construction and many more. Bringing the same technology that has provided large cost savings and planning ability to film production and use that for other industries now with AR, is exciting.
Having spent time at Snapchat and seeing firsthand how AR and can be used in a social media context also shows the many opportunities that AR has using mobile devices used by millions of users today already. A big focus we have at Superba is focusing on characters in AR as well as visualizing data in a meaningful way.
After all, humans are not flat, but spacial and the world we see around us is spatial. The next evolution ahead is that the world of information is also becoming depth-aware.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Every challenge you tackle comes with obstacles, especially when you talk innovation and do things that have never been done before. It all comes down to finding solutions for those problems and staying on the path for your vision.
A few years ago, I was tasked to develop a virtual camera system to be used on Green Lantern that was supposed to have similar functionality as the Avatar Virtual camera system but is much cheaper. It was a great challenge, and it came together solving one problem at a time. A few years later, it was used by Zack Snyder on Man of Steel. He liked it so much he asked to have one installed in his house.
Fast forward to solving the challenges of AR and people using iPads and phones to use AR or glasses, many of the challenges remain the same. I believe if you can solve the problem once it gives you the confidence you can solve similar challenges in the future as well.
Please tell us about Superba AR.
At Superba AR we focus on Augmented Reality and make it accessible to businesses and people in their everyday lives. We specialize in using mobile devices such as phones and tablets primarily instead of glasses at this point which puts the power of Augmented Reality in the hands of many people today and not just tomorrow.
We focus on characters, that means from digitally scanning a basketball player to actors and making them available in AR applications. Leveraging the advancements of Artificial intelligence and image analysis are also part of our toolset. AR will change how we shop, learn and make decisions in many industries.
The ability to see furniture in your apartment in its real-world measurements and being able to place to see what designs you like before buying is a known example where it all comes together. Not only does it help the consumer but also the manufacturer gets less product sent back, and they also learn how a customer thinks and interacts with their products.
The ability to tell a brands story in a completely new way, from extending what they saw on a billboard or on tv and bringing the products and characters to live right in front of you excites me. It changes your ability to learn how for example an engine works, seeing it in 3d and being able to walk around it using your phone. All of a sudden you can look at it from any angle and understand quickly how a product or device works.
What sets us apart is that we are not just a technology company, but we come from a visual effects background where we understand that in the end, it all has to serve the story or the customer and not just do it for technologies sake.
In the end, you need real solutions for real-world challenges, that’s where the value of AR in the end shines. Our team members have worked over a decade on Hollywood movies and in AR lets us combine the creative and the technology part in a unique way.
