Meet Inglewood Hair Braider: Briel Walls

Today we’d like to introduce you to Briel Walls.

Briel, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I first learned how to braid my Barbie’s hair around the age of 5, I thought it was so cool lol. I remember my older sister having a doll head and I wanted one too… Ever since then I’ve always been doing hair for fun. I always loved trying new things & not only with my hair but my siblings and friends as well. Joining the natural hair movement 3 years ago, I have found a new love in natural hair care.

2 years ago I had my son and I no longer wanted to work for anyone, so I used what I knew how to do best to make my own income and to grow my own business.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road has not been super smooth, but I cannot complain about it. It has been a learning process, from me learning how to deal with people to the long hours spent. Oh and I can’t forget the practice and patience it takes to get a new technique down. It has all been well worth it.

How would you describe the type of kid you were growing up?
Growing up I was very social and made quite a few friends. I’ve always been pretty chill and laid back for the most part, but I had a lot of fun in my younger years. In elementary/middle school I went from gymnastics to ballet, to volleyball and basketball.

I was always interested in being my own boss and working for myself. I started selling mix tapes in the 4th or 5th grade. At home, I was definitely a music head. I listened to lots of oldies, lots, and lots of rap, but also a lot of pop and r&b. From The Commodores to Tupac, music has been a big influence in my life throughout the years.

I always had big dreams and believed I could do anything. I always wanted to be a mother and own my own businesses. I think my younger self would be proud 🙂

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
One of my favorite memories is from when I was about 11. I remember waking up one Christmas morning to a room literally full of gifts. My parents bought my siblings and I bikes, scooters, clothes… we even got an air hockey table. Spending the holiday with my family is always great, gifts or not, but that Christmas was one for the books.

So, what should we be on the lookout for, what’s next in store for you?
My number one plan for the future is to be successful. Whether I’m a hairstylist, a nurse, or a housewife, my goal is to be happy with whatever I chose to do and to always give it my all. I don’t know what God has in store for me but I know it’s going to be nothing but greatness!
