Today we’d like to introduce you to Stella Shirinda.
Stella, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Being a Venice local there is such a sense of community and Sean Knibb, my partner, and I always wanted to continue that. Then one day, space opened up right next to Sean’s design studio in Venice, which created an opportunity for us to be able to do something together, and we just jumped on it.
Sean always had a vision for a shop combining florals with other elements, which stemmed from him working in his grandmother’s flower shop as a kid, in Jamaica. One thing leads to another, and here we are, equal parts coffee, gifts, and florals, the perfect trio!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting any business always has its ups and downs, of course. In the beginning, it was a bit of a struggle getting heads in the door, to say the least. Foot traffic on Lincoln Blvd. wasn’t really what it is now. But we stuck it out, created a goal for ourselves and put our energy into the details of our space, to make it somewhere people wanted to be, and wanted to come back to.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Flowerboy project not only a cafe but a florist and a boutique. We don’t want to be put in one category, and we find that works best. Each sector of our shop compliments itself.
When people stop by they’re experiencing something new, not just a one-stop-shop, but a place that has amazing drinks, fresh, unique florals that you can arrange into a bouquet, yourself, and goods/gifts from all over the world, that tell a story.
We carry anything from art to home goods, crystals to apparel. I think one thing that sets us apart, is that we aren’t just a “shop,” we are a brand. We create our own Flowerboy Project branded items, that we create ourselves, each step of the way.
Under our growing brand, we have hats, cashmere beanies, blankets, bags, etc. Our latest addition is our ‘City Scent’ Candles. A collection of 9 candles, representing cities local to us.
What were you like growing up?
If I had to pick one word, I’d say vivacious, and I was very interested in anything creative, where I could be hands-on.
