Today we’d like to introduce you to The Perez Bros.
The Perez Bros, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
For as long as we can remember we have always been into art. Our mom always tells us that when we were little kids, we would always be drawing or coloring. It was in our senior year in South East High School that our Art teacher Ms. Tinajero convinced us to apply at Otis College of Art and Design. We didn’t really know what we wanted to do after High School, but one thing that we did know for sure was that we loved painting. We applied and surprisingly we both got accepted into Otis. It was at Otis where we started to team up and work on paintings together. We took a painting class with Scott Grieger during our sophomore year at Otis, and he gave us all a collaboration assignment, and naturally, we both teamed up and created a painting together. Ever since that day, we have been working together on our paintings.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
We work together to create large acrylic paintings on canvas. Our inspiration is the beautiful city of Los Angeles, we are specifically fascinated with the car culture in L.A. We have always been a part of the culture since our dad has been in Lowrider car clubs for as long as we can remember. Through our paintings, we hope to make our audience feel as if they were attending a car show and feel a connection. We take photos at car shows that we attend and use them as references to create our paintings. We work together in every aspect of the painting; from coming up with ideas to creating a painting.
The stereotype of a starving artist scares away many potentially talented artists from pursuing art – any advice or thoughts about how to deal with the financial concerns an aspiring artist might be concerned about?
We definitely recommend getting a part-time job, it doesn’t necessarily have to be art related, but it should be enough to pay the bills and put food on the table. That would allow you to have time to work on your art.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
People can see our work on our website www.theperezbros.com and Instagram @theperezbros. People can support our work by giving us a follow on Instagram and attending art shows that we are a part of, and of course buying some of our artwork.
We are currently in a few upcoming group shows with Thinkspace gallery; ‘The New Vanguard II’ at Lancaster MOAH, ‘Nexus II’ at The Brand Library and Arts Center, and ‘Scope Miami’.
