Meet Hailin Fu

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hailin Fu.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was born in China, a very normal family. My mom and my sister are school teacher, and my dad works with the government. I remembered that when I was a little kid, there was a man in our neighborhood, he had a dragon tattoo on his arm. To a little boy like me, it was such an impact! At the age of 13, I started tattooing with sewing needle. At the age of 15, all the kids, who are interested in tattooing in my neighborhood, have at least one tattoo from me. I started an advertising company after school. After a little while, I closed the company and decided to become a tattoo artist. My childhood buddies were not surprised at my decision. Being a tattoo artist is like a destiny to me.

Please tell us about your art.
Due to my background, I’m well aware of the history of Western Art and Oriental Art. As a Chinese tattoo artist, I’m not leaning towards either of them; I know a lot of people have tried to combine them together; for example in 1940, Zhang Daqian/ Chang Dai-Chien had collaborated with Picasso. However, it’s more structural, concrete when it comes to Western Art; whereas Oriental Art is more self-composed yet full of imagination. What I’m trying to say is that there shouldn’t be “barrier” due to geographical reason. Nowadays, there are millions of impeccable, innovative cooperation in all fields, especially in the music industry.

We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
I couldn’t agree with you more. Artist is alone. It’s hard to have someone that understand your thoughts. I’m like a teabag releasing myself into the mug. Outside the mug is out of my league. That’s why I am planning on showing my artwork to the world. My work reflects my idea of combing East and West.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
You can follow my Instagram @hailin_fu_tattoo for my latest updates. I’m also planning on opening my own art gallery in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York in the near future. You will see my artwork at the gallery.
