Today we’d like to introduce you to Elliott Nes.
Elliott, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always been enthralled with graffiti and cities and how messy and yet intentional they both can be. About 9 years ago I put those interests to work and started spray painting stencils. Inspired by the graffiti around me and the growing street art interest around the world I worked on developing my own work. It wasn’t until 5 or 6 years of testing and experimenting did I feel I had found a style and voice that fit what I wanted to convey. My paintings work to convey people in flux. Not complete but not necessarily broken either. With parts coming into place and pieces falling away, it reflects my belief that we are never complete, that we are always evolving and changing with the world around us.
In the past few years I’ve started showing my work. I have participated in an Art Walk in Seattle, moved down to LA this past year, and painted a couple murals. I plan to continue to see where my work takes me and what doors may open from my continued growth whether it be galleries, outdoor installations, or something in between.
Has it been a smooth road?
When you look at it from 30,000 feet it hasn’t been too rough. It’s just a thing that takes time. Developing your style, finding yourself, gaining connections, finding people who want to support you. It all doesn’t happen overnight, and perseverance has served me well. I would love to have accomplished more but that’s just my nature, to always expect better. When you look at it all, staying patient and keeping at it has been my key.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Elliott Nes – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
The short version is I paint stencils, big and small, inspired by pop art, contemporary art, street art, and graffiti. I’m always looking to work with others, for a wall to paint, or to show my work on. I work in a unique space I’ve heard from people I’ve partnered with that I have the ability to invoke street art, and contemporary art, but have very clean, sharp lines which give it a sophisticated look.
Beyond spray paint, I’m always trying to find new ways to express myself creatively. I’ve started a zine series this year called First Things First as well as produced a line of matchbooks with my artwork. I’m always looking to learn new methods of creation and will always try my hand at something that peaks my interest.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
This is my first year in LA, I came down from Seattle in November ’17. I love how much there is to do. I love how much art there is and how there is a new event all the time that I can go to. It keeps the creative wheels always moving.
Like least? Probably just the lack of connections I have being new here. But that goes back to having patience and perseverance. Everything takes time.
