Today we’d like to introduce you to Donna Sternberg.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I began my dance career dancing for several other dance companies. I started choreographing on my own beginning with solo concerts and eventually starting a dance company of my own. About 13 years ago I started to become interested in exploring the intersection of dance and science and since that time most of my work has been inspired by science. I have worked with scientists from a variety of fields and created work inspired by topics as diverse as theoretical physics, botany, immunology, dark energy, environmental science, perception and memory, celestial mechanics, and the history of flight.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has presented many challenges, foremost of which is bringing awareness to and building support for contemporary dance. Los Angeles has not been a particularly friendly dance city but that appears to be changing. The challenges of establishing and maintaining any arts organization are formidable and require business acumen as well as artistic vision. Funding, opportunities, diversifying and growing audiences and finding and keeping skilled dancers are all difficulties that must be faced.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Donna Sternberg & Dancers – what should we know?
We are a contemporary dance company whose mission is to discover, transform, and connect. We seek to build bridges and make connections between dance and science, and are particularly interested in finding innovative ways to probe the science/human connection through dance in collaboration with other art forms. We are committed to partnering with and presenting multiple cultural viewpoints and involve a diverse community of dancers, choreographers and collaborators in our programs. What makes us unique is creating and presenting work that focuses on the interplay of dance and science and for presenting programs both in traditional and nontraditional spaces like parks, gardens, libraries and art galleries.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Perseverance, love of dance, curiosity, willingness to take risks.
