Today we’d like to introduce you to Tom Brecht.
Tom, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
From the time I can remember, I have always been interested in solving puzzles and building things. Technology was a natural transition when I was a teenager, providing an endless playground to learn something new. I got started writing software at the University of Colorado Boulder and quickly found that I excelled at some of the more frustrating aspects that my classmates disliked.
After graduating with a degree in computer science, I took a job in the Midwest developing healthcare software. While a great place to get started, I wanted to work on products that everyone could get their hands on and experience.
Upon moving to the Los Angeles area, I secured a position writing software in the video game industry. Quickly the software I was writing was being used by millions of gamers worldwide to deliver up-to-date game patches and other content.
After some time in the video game industry and the publishing industry, I landed at 1iota and currently lead a diverse team of developers and am in charge of creating and managing the company’s software products. Being in the entertainment world provides myself and my team an endless stream of exciting new ideas, goals and challenges.
Has it been a smooth road?
One inherent challenge of working in software is that technology is always changing, providing a constant supply of new software languages, techniques and platforms to try. My team and I strive to stay toward the cutting edge of technology and use the right tool for the job even if that means learning something new.
The company has grown significantly since I joined more than 6 years ago, so we’ve had to adapt rapidly and learn new ways to communicate as a team to streamline the development process. We find that constant iteration is the best way to ensure that everyone is satisfied with the process and sanity is maintained.
