Meet Julissa Prado of Rizos Curls in North Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julissa Prado.

Julissa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing up, I went through many phases with my curly hair. I hid it in a tight, gelled-down ponytail, wore it à la crunchy with extra hairspray, and even straightened with a clothes iron! As a little girl, I saved my money to buy every curl product I found – but nothing ever worked.

While battling with my hair over the years, I told myself that one day I would create the very best product for curly-haired girls like me. I spent years searching for the perfect formula. I wanted a product made with quality ingredients that could celebrate all curl types, from my Tia’s coily strands to my sister’s loose waves. With Rizos Curls, I finally turned my dream into a reality.

Rizos Curls is created from the heart and is my perfect formula for bouncy, shiny, defined, frizz-free, soft, voluminous curls. I officially launched Rizos Curls with the help of my family Oct 2017. We have been very blessed to have had so much support from our curly community. In the 10 months since we launched, Rizos Curls and I have accumulated over 216k followers across social media platforms, been featured on Forbes, People, Buzzed, Mitu, Remezcla, Naturally Curly, Levo, Hip Latina, Snapchat Homepage etc. and shipped to over 20 countries.

Has it been a smooth road?
So many learning curves along the way. Every day I’m learning something new, from how to code something new on our website, shipping strategies, video editing, photography. Our team and I all wear many hats and face new challenges every day. It’s exhilarating.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Rizos Curls – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Rizos Curls is a line of hair care products that aims at encouraging women & girls to be proud of their naturally curly hair and show them that curly hair is beautiful. I am most proud of reaching customers that now with Rizos Curls feel comfortable enough to wear their hair natural for the first time. I went through that same process.

For me learning to love my natural hair was a big part of learning to love myself. It’s an honor for me to help other curly haired people achieve that.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I am born and raised in LA. I went to UCLA for college. Most of my family lives in Mid City, so LA to me feels like a member of my family. You can’t talk about LA without talking about the Latino culture. We are one in the same. I love everything about LA, but what I love most is the hustle.

My entrepreneurial spirit came from growing up in Mid City and Pacoima and seeing so many examples of CEOS working hard to create something with whatever resources they had. Whether it was the lady next door that started out selling pupusas from her front yard to later on a truck, or the fruit lady always on the same corner rain or shines selling fruit.

If there wasn’t a job for them, they would create one and do it with honor and pride. There is nothing more inspiring to me than growing up seeing this firsthand.
