Meet Highland Park Photographer: Geoffrey Nicholson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Geoffrey Nicholson.

Geoffrey, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My interest in photography started as a teen. My father did photography as a hobby, introducing me to various format cameras and teaching me how to print in our makeshift basement darkroom. Soon after learning how to operate a camera I started photographing hardcore punk shows in the 1980s for a fanzine I did with another friend from high school. I then went to college for photojournalism at the Rochester Institute of Technology. After college, I got a staff job at an architectural photography company. Since, I’ve moved away from architecture, working more on editorial assignments, product, portraiture, music, as well as my own personal projects.

Has it been a smooth road?
The photography business is seldom a smooth road. The struggle is always getting that next job, and getting jobs that are really enjoyable, well suited to what you do best.

When you look back, what are you most proud of?
Having my personal project my personal project on lowriders published on the cover View Camera.

Were there moments when you had to struggle?
The photo business is almost always a struggle. Relocating from Chicago to Los Angeles was probably the biggest struggle, forcing myself to start over.

Is there something we can do as a city to improve the outlook for professionals like you?
Los Angeles is a great place to start and a tough place to start. There’s great potential for getting work here, but if your photo skills are not top notch the competition will eat you up.
