Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Lawrence.
Stephanie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My career in makeup artistry began after attending MUD in 2007 and I booked my first job as beauty makeup assistant on a horror feature. When that wrapped, I needed supplemental income until the next project, so I started working at The Beauty Closet (now closed) in Studio City. It was there that I was introduced to a whole other world of makeup careers in print, advertising, celebrity and fashion. I was enamored! With encouragement from my family, I dove head first into those freelancing waters and have been swimming in them ever since! I believe I am at this point in my 11 year career because of two things. One: support. Support from my family, friends, clients, producers, brands, agencies, etc. I’m certain I would not be this far without others. Two: stick-to-itiveness. One must be relentless in the pursuit of their dreams! I’m also really excited to share that my very first cosmetic product is currently in development, due early next year!!!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’ve seen my share of obstacles and challenging situations but I don’t want to get hung up on the specifics of them. Anytime an issue comes up, recognize your part in it, learn, and let it go. Don’t allow yourself to hold on to hardships, it could prevent you from growing. If you are a young person starting out, my best advice is to get professional training. Practice on your friends, family and people of all skin tones and textures! Assist! Find an artist you admire and reach out. With social media, it’s easier than ever to connect to people who inspire you. Ask questions and do your research on who has put in the work to master their craft. Learn from them.

Lately, I’ve been doing more beauty advertising and branding work. Print is my favorite type of job. There is something so incredibly special about seeing your work in a mall or mailer! That feeling of walking into a store and showing your family your contribution means so much more than I can say! What really sets me apart from other artists is my authenticity. I connect to clients by being honest. They know that what I’m saying is my truth and it can be anything from scheduling to looks to something deeply personal. I like connecting to people by offering bits of me and my journey to self-acceptance. I believe it enhances my work and the overall experience for my clients.
What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
In addition to what I said before about training and working on various skin types, tones and textures across different platforms, I would offer a young woman just starting her career this piece of advice: know your worth. Don’t be bullied or undervalued or sexualized in the work place. Stand strong in who you are and you will find your lane.
