Today we’d like to introduce you to David Oswald.
David, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m a Los Angeles-based photographer specializing in portrait, fashion, glamour, beauty, and landscape photography, for the advertising, editorial, and retail markets. I have written two books titled, A Journey Through Mukuntuweap: The History of Zion National Park and The Moab Canyons Experience.
My first professional photography job came in the summer of 1978. After graduating from Rosemead High School, where I had three years of photography, World Imports, hired me to photograph wicker products at their warehouse in Alhambra for a new catalog. In 1979, I rented office space in Alhambra and used it as a studio. During this time, I began to build my portfolio and had several freelance jobs while attending Pasadena City College. The business name David Oswald Photography was established in 1980. The first Job I did under the business name was for Athens Disposal. In later years, I moved my studio to Westwood and Glendale. Today, I work primarily on location (home, office, or local area) and will rent studio space upon a client’s request. In addition to photography, I also specialize in photo retouching and restoration. I shoot fully digital and do all of my own post production processing.
Currently, I’m working on a personal book project titled, “A City of Angels: The History of Los Angeles, its Landmarks, and Fashions.” Available in 2018. It will feature Los Angeles landmarks, historical stories, models, and local fashion designers. Public support will be made available through crowdfunding.
Has it been a smooth road?
There has never been a smooth road in this business. Competition has always been a struggle from the get-go. Especially with pricing. Today’s technology in digital photography has diluted the professional photographer market pool. There are many wannabes out there who believe since they own a high-end DSLR camera makes them a professional photographer. They charge ridiculously low rates and the quality work shows their lack of experience and knowledge in photography.
Another obstacle is overhead. This is why I currently work on location and will rent studio space if it’s within the client’s budget.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and career?
I’m going to answer both. My Family has always been my good luck. I wouldn’t necessarily say, literally, that I’ve had any bad luck. However, the stumbling block in my career, as with many pro photographers, is having a successful marketing plan that is cost effective and will pay for itself as well as providing future dollars to increase my advertising budget.
Most of my business has come from the best form of free advertising, “Word of Mouth.”
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Personality and communication skills are key characteristics that has carried me throughout my career.
What do you love about our city and what do you dislike?
What can I say? “I love L.A.” There are opportunities in this city for many artists. Unlike New York City, L.A’s weather is ideal, but we desperately need rain.
The city needs to help the homeless with more opportunities and shelters.
