Meet Ethan Gold

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ethan Gold.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Ethan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve been making music since I was little. I’m not that enormous now, but I still make music and started releasing it using the tools of the new music business.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
An industry in free-fall, as a generation decided the ‘product’ should be ‘free’, made it more challenging. Streaming has become the new industry, and gatekeepers have come back in force. But these are challenges — the struggles are within. I think this is probably true for many people. Overcoming internal resistance.

Electrik Gold – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I just named my music company last month, to be honest. I’d put out some music under another name but never felt comfortable with it. I wanted a name that reflected the energy I want in the music. I have art rock, soundtracks, and synthpop coming down the pipe (the pike?).

To answer your question, I try not to work on the basis of pride. I do what I’m moved to do. I’m collaborating with my dream life. To be proud of that would be fairly silly. But pride probably has virtues which I may try on. Witness both the political and music worlds. Some of the most successful people in this era use pride as their absolute chief fuel, rather than talent, intelligence, or dignity.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success starts at home. Making things that please my inner critic, which can be harsh, but is getting more forgiving. I’ve somewhat gleefully abandoned perfection, which I used to aim for. I now am convinced that perfection is far less perfect than imperfection.

From there, it’s a matter of marketing, or to use a friendlier term, sharing. External success would be when my music is in peoples’ lives. So much so that touring makes financial sense. But it would be a waste of life to put this kind of success in front of making something meaningful. There are a lot of easier ways of making money than music, especially these days.
