Today we’d like to introduce you to Dale Benfield.
Dale, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up in my dad’s photo lab, and my first “real” job was printing pictures, working in the darkroom, and learning the tools of the trade from him. After high school, I paid my way through college shooting portraits, and then weddings. I’m still in love with weddings but have added fashion to my list of favorite genres to shoot. Along the way, I learned a lot about business, how to take care of my clients, and even wrote a book (which was published by PeachPit Press last year) called 5 Minute Fix: 200 Tips to Grow Your Photography Business. I love capturing emotion and love, and I’m obsessed with light.
Has it been a smooth road?
I tell photographers that it took me 10 years to become an overnight success. Learning the business and marketing aspect of running a successful photography business was challenging but really fun and rewarding. I’ve found myself in new markets, leaning on what I’ve learned in the past to make a name for myself over and over again.
Have you ever wanted to stop doing what you do and just start over?
I think every business goes through difficult times. Thankfully I have always been in a stable situation with loyal clients. It has everything to do with you treating them with respect and not just as a client. Being genuine goes a really long way!
What advice do you wish to give to those thinking about pursuing a path similar to yours?
To ensure success, photographers have to be more than photographers. Networking is key, but it’s a daily grind where business mixes with art. My advice is to work harder than anyone else, care more than anyone else, and treat everyone you come into contact with respect.
What are you looking forward to?
I’m most looking forward to continuing to build relationships with my clients and couples, getting to know more industry professionals and providing a great life for myself doing what I absolutely love!
