Today we’d like to introduce you to Nina Jackel.
Nina, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started Lady Freethinker in 2013 as a personal blog on philosophical issues of animal and human rights. Over the years, we morphed into a platform for news and activism, covering current events and posting petitions to effect meaningful change — particularly in stopping animal abuse.
In 2015, we became a 501(c)(3) registered nonprofit organization. We now have a team of writers creating content for millions of readers.
Thanks to generous donor support, we’re even able to go beyond publishing to help animals directly. For example, we’re providing food and other supplies to shelters that save dogs and cats from the cruel meat trade in China and S. Korea.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has been an enjoyable, fulfilling road — but I would never say it has been easy.
In the beginning, I self-funded LFT while working as campaign director for Last Chance for Animals, an animal advocacy group. I’d get home from work at 6 pm, and work on LFT until 10 or 11. Then, I’d work on LFT all weekend.
Publishing is hugely competitive; it’s extremely hard to build an audience, let alone become financially sustainable. Along with the many hours of work, every extra cent of mine went into LFT for years.
But they say a job doesn’t feel like work if you enjoy it, and that is absolutely true in this case. I’m thankful that the efforts paid off, and it’s been exhilarating to watch LFT succeed. Knowing that my “job” is helping create a more compassionate world is an amazing thing.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Lady Freethinker – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Lady Freethinker (LFT) is a nonprofit media organization that publishes news and grassroots action for a free and compassionate world — for all species.
We focus on stopping cruelty to animals and push for policies that prevent the suffering of all animals (including human) and protect the planet.
Our petitions against animal abuse have collectively garnered nearly 10 million signatures, and directly saved animals’ lives. Our news stories expose hidden suffering that may otherwise go unnoticed — because when we are informed, we are empowered to help.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
There’s nowhere else in the world I would rather live than Los Angeles. This is the cultural center of the world, in my eyes. I love the rich diversity, the blossoming arts, and the exceptional food. And did I mention the weather?
I’m from New York originally, and while NY has a special place in my heart, LA is my true hometown. But of course, we all know the traffic sucks.
