Today we’d like to introduce you to Betty Moon.
Betty, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I initially got my start in the music industry at a very young age. During my teenage years, I was a singer-songwriter in Toronto and dedicated my life to making music and creating a lifestyle that revolved around that process. Within a short timeframe, I managed to make my first album and sell over 10,000 copies on my own without any label assistance. This led to interest from Gerry Young at Current Management who had some of the top bands in the country at the time and a major label deal with A&M shortly after. I was still at Humber College studying music and also modeling and doing fashion shows.
A lot to handle but I was driven. I had developed a sense of discipline from studying ballet in my younger years that carried through to my work ethic today. The D.I.Y approach gave me a discipline and real-world education about the music business that I continue to practice… After many album releases and relocating to the Los Angeles area I decided to open my own production company and boutique record label called Evolver Music, Inc. We have a great team out here in Encino and our releases have racked up millions of plays online and dozens of placements in film, television and retail channels.
We are also moving into offering services such as publicity and marketing to other artists that we as a team choose to get behind. We can also pitch their music as an additional service beyond marketing, promotion and secure sync license deals, most of which are non-exclusive.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
With so many labels having tough times and the steady decline of the traditional recording industry, running your own company has many risks and challenges. When you stick with something long enough and have developed strong relationships and you see it move forward and grow, progress can be extremely rewarding in today’s crazy, competitive industry. As many may know, the music industry has gone through a major shift over the past 10 years with physical formats declining in popularity and digital retailers making moves to reign as king.
Businesses have to adjust as they used to rely on huge profits from CD sales and licensing in film/tv had much bigger payouts. For independent artists these days, including the ones Evolver Music works with, we focus on the quality of the product and finding revenue streams that can best let the artist thrive. Being a smaller business allows us to quickly pivot as trends change and we’re very thankful we can do that.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Evolver Music story. Tell us more about the business.
Evolver Music, Inc. specializes in the entire process of making creative content for artists and bands in multiple genres. From making an album, artwork, music videos, marketing and even licensing services, Evolver likes to keep everything in-house without holding artists to traditional record deals that can lock them down for years. They are really in charge of what they want to spend in terms of a budget and how they want to brand themselves.
For many of the Betty Moon releases, we’ve done just that and worked with our amazing team to put together content that is top quality and grabs attention worldwide. We stand out from other companies since we offer a la carte services but can also bundle the entire process together based off the needs of the artist. Many of the other music companies out there offer similar services, but the machine they are a part of is so big and the gateway to entry is nearly impossible.
Artists in arrangements with larger companies may not get the attention they deserve, compared to respect towards their individuality, and what we give to our clients that work with Evolver. We understand how difficult the path is and we are here to define their brand and make it easier and focused.
How do you, personally, define success? What’s your criteria, the markers you’re looking out for, etc?
In the music industry, emotion plays a huge role in success for the artist and company involved. Witnessing quality exposure for our amazing artists and creative work is the most rewarding thing that can unfold. Just like with any other product or business, if the public and target customers don’t know about you then it’s not really worth our time. We follow our passion with everything we do and know the money will follow once it reaches our customers.
We also just don’t work with anyone and are strict on vetting the clients we work with on all project types. With over 300 emails received a day, our team has to sift through many submissions to find that perfect client that matches our services and has the potential for making to the next level. We also love and work with specific types of music, especially in the rock, indie, dance and pop genres.
