Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Loose.
Sean, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’ve always drawn, so I went to art school to study illustration. Developing my style was tough, and at first, I worked really hard to create work that was highly representational. In one of those, “Oh my God, what am I going to do with my life??” moments, I decided to take a few graphic design classes in my junior year. I fell in love with design and wanted to find a way to marry it with an illustrative career. I think people responded to that, and soon after graduating, I landed a job for a small local theatre designing movie posters (still one of my favorite things to do). Eventually, I found myself in LA!
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I work commercially, so sometimes it is just a matter of providing my take on a client’s vision. However, when I get the chance to create work for the fun of it, I find that I’m usually influenced by elements of pop – culture, especially movies, music, and television. Visually, I like to draw from design – heavy styles, like Cubism, Futurism, and Art Deco. I think that in a world where you can do almost anything to a photograph, it’s fun and interesting to get really graphic with a subject, taking down to flat shapes and clean lines.
What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
I feel like I’m constantly thinking I know the answer to that question, and then also constantly realizing that I don’t. I think success means different things for different people. Ideally though, working steadily on projects that you care about (and being appropriately compensated) is a fairly good measure.
Perseverance, patience, ambition, those are all super important. But I also think people don’t give enough thought to attitude and being easy to work with. Even if you work alone, art is a very collaborative profession.
