Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Villatoro.
Jamie is an artist living and working in Long Beach. Born to Guatemalan immigrant parents, she was raised in the suburbs of the San Fernando Valley. Her naturally creative adventurous nature gravitated her towards the visual arts. She attended Pierce College and Jamie later received her Bachelors of Arts with an emphasis in drawing and painting at California State University Long Beach, 2013.
She works in a variety of mediums including watercolor, oils, acrylics, charcoal, and collage.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am an intuitive painter inspired by the urban environments, nature and animals I research. The most vital aspect of my process is how I respond to color, form, and brush stroke. The constant push and pull of these elements create a visual symbiotic relationship in my works.
Color activates the energy in my paintings. The process of mixing colors and applying them to the canvas is the basis of my search to create harmony and make something beautiful.
My creative approach focuses on the discovery of new ideas and adventure. I seek to communicate stories and my own experience. Using an expressive color palette, I aim to convey mood and feeling. Music, photographs, memories and various collected objects are important tools in my creative ritual.
Through oil painting I share my abstract expressions. In drawing I play with literal imagery and a hint of whimsy. Because my process explores constant change, I am not committed to one style or technique.
Art empowers my curiosity and fuels my passion for wonder.
How can artists connect with other artists?
I joined the FA4 Collective during its initial creation by a few alumni peers. It has been a great way to keep in touch, stay focused, share resources, opportunities, and professional networking. Also keep up with what is out there. Visit artists’ studios, galleries, and art openings. Stay inspired.
