Today we’d like to introduce you to Deborah Kolb.
Deborah, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a lifestyle Photographer and one of my biggest joys in life is to capture people authentically while making them feel great! Freezing a moment in time that will put a smile on your face! For as long as I can remember I have been drawn to photography. Taking pictures is a part of my daily life. I come from a family of Artist and while in school I won an Art scholarship to attend drawing and painting classes at the Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester. It was there that I believe I got my eye for composition. I shoot on location and I have an Amazing studio here in Topanga. I enjoy people and we all have fun during a shoot. Along with capturing everyday moments, I have a passion for capturing an Authors vision for their novel. So I have shot several book covers Romance and Teen Novels. So much fun!!
Has it been a smooth road?
Building a business as an Artist takes a firm commitment. In Los Angeles, there is a lot of amazing talent. So if I am not selected for a commercial job I see who did get the job and look at their work and see where I can improve my marketing or creativity. Having faith that my work will light up my clients is my backbone during lean times.
Do you feel luck has played a role in your life?
Luck, Karma and being prepared to take advantage of an opportunity, they have all played a role in my life!!!!
I had a picture that I took in Maui of a Fire Dancer and every time I looked at it I would think “Wow I need to submit this to a Photography Contest” and so I did. Well, I became the Grand Prize Winner of Islands Magazine’s Annual photo contest. The prize was an all expense paid vacation to Tahiti and a Luxury Cruise on Paul Gauguin Cruises!!. Is there a quality or characteristic that has played an outsized role in your success?
My intuition, integrity, playfulness, creativity and general enjoyment of people.
Tell us about your favorite and least favorites things about our city.
Our city is a huge playground! I love the diversity and variety it offers. People from all over the world come to LA to achieve their dreams or just to live a healthier life due to the year round great climate. We have amazing Beaches, Mountains, Hiking, Entertainment and Restaurants. The biggest challenge with LA is the Traffic so I Love Sunday early mornings to enjoy the freeways when they are wide open!
