Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan McCulloch.
Megan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After many years of designing for other brands, I decided to start my own. I wanted to create something with purpose rather than more of the same. I also had a desire to work with local manufacturers to support the apparel industry here in Los Angeles.
I collect crystals and wear them regularly in my bra, After a long day at work, I came home unhinged my bra and one of my favorite piece of smoky quartz flew across the room and broke. This sparked the idea for our Intention & Affirmation Bras. From there I grew the collection offering more lingerie and loungewear.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
On struggle we have encountered has been to build our store and customer base. It’s a unique concept and I think some are skeptical about crystals and their healing properties.
It has also been challenging being a small company, wearing all the hats. But things somehow always work themselves out and I am constantly learning from these experiences!
Please tell us about Max & Vera.
In our society, most are striving for more self-care and awareness, including myself. What that meant to me was connecting and tuning into your vibration. Focusing on who you want to be and what you want to do. Shedding layers of bad habits, people and thoughts that no longer serve you. Being thankful for what you do have and to do the work to maintain this positive stream of consciences.
By incorporating crystals into my line, it helps to support these energetic shifts you want to make. Meditation has become such a powerful tool in my life, to remain focused and a peace. Practicing with crystals and also wearing them throughout the day help me slow down, grounding me to a little piece of the earth. That connection helps me become more present.
I am inspired by things old and new, regularly thrift and collect vintage. We are also known for selling vintage items in our Etsy shop MAXnadVERAvinatge and also participate in local pop-ups shops throughout the city.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
In my home ec class in high school, I made a pair of velvet leopard bell bottoms. It was the first time I had ever sewn or designed a garment. It was such an exciting moment in my life, to discover something you love to do! Little did I know, that would become my career path.
