Conversations with the Inspiring Carla Victoria Flores

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carla Victoria Flores.

Carla Victoria, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I began practicing makeup on my friends and cousins back in high school when I realized that’s what I wanted to do. Following high school, I started promoting myself and my work on social media platforms which lead to me freelancing. As the years went by, I started building my clientele and went to Make-Up Designory to learn more and become a certified make-up artist. Since then, I’ve met so many amazing people who have been connections to a lot of the work I do today, whether it’s bridal parties, photo shoots, editorial shoots, videos, etc.

Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been easy. The make-up industry is SO saturated right now. Everyone wants to be a makeup artist, which is great but that made it more of a challenge for me to stand out amongst all of the other people that wanted to be makeup artists too. With that being said, my advice to anyone who’d like to become a makeup artist would be to stay true to yourself, find your personal style and what makes you different. When you find what makes you different, you stand out and that leads to more recognition!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Carla Victoria Makeup story. Tell us more about the business.
As we know by now, I am a make-up artist! Lol! With my makeup, I try to create stories. Especially with Instagram. If you see, I try my best to have a little storyline with my makeup posts and keep them true to the season as much as possible. For example in the Spring time, I use bright or pastel spring-like colors inspired by flowers, plants and all the things that the season of Spring gives us. I also get a lot of recognition around Halloween time. Making Halloween looks is my favorite! I get to experiment and make all these crazy creatures or re-create different characters from other artists or movies and people love it! So it makes me feel good.
What sets me apart from others is that I try to remain true to my own style like I said, I try my best to stay true to the seasons and think “hmm what do I want to see that I haven’t seen already?” Then, I go from there.

Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
Do a lot of research. Find the influencers/beauty gurus you love most and watch their videos or listen to what they have to say. Everyone is different and does things their own ways but it’ll help give you an idea. Also, ask the people around you. I love when those closest to me give me feedback or ideas and say, “you should do something like this, or that” they are your audience too and that’s what you want to do overall, give in to your audience. Give them something they want to see!
