Today we’d like to introduce you to Shai Jordan.
Hi Shai, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Shai Jordan, I’m 14 year old and a music producer and lyricist. I first got into music when I was really little, like two or three years old. I used to try to sing and rap before I could even say full sentences. My mom has a lot of home videos of me doing it. Music has always been around me because my dad is a rap artist, and he would take me to the studio with him while he made beats. I’d just be there watching and listening, soaking it all in. My mom is also a musician—she’s a singer and songwriter—and she’s influenced me a lot too. Even my grandfather on my mom’s side was in bands back in the 60s and 70s, so music has kind of always been a family thing.
When I was around five, I loved singing and dancing all the time. My mom says I was like a mini Bruno Mars, and honestly that makes sense because he’s been one of my biggest inspirations since I was a toddler. I feel like I was blessed with a gift for writing and composing music early on. Around seven or eight, my mom signed me up for online music production classes on Outschool, where I learned how to use Soundtrap and make my own beats. My dad helped me a lot too—he taught me how to format beats and showed me different programs and tricks for producing. I also taught myself how to sample and play piano, so I’d say I’m mostly self-taught.
Lately, I’ve been inspired by artists like Kendrick Lamar, Kanye, and Pharrell, but what’s really been pushing me to create is my faith. My projects Take Them to Church and FSFC (Father Son Full Circle) came from my belief in God and Jesus. I feel called to make music that inspires people to think differently, find what they believe in, and hopefully be led closer to Jesus. For my generation, I think positivity matters—shifting your mindset, shifting the atmosphere when you walk into a room. In a world full of distractions, having faith is important, especially when the journey isn’t easy. I want my music to remind people to keep moving, to keep climbing, and to know there’s a God who is with them every step of the way. I hope make more inspiring music and hopefully have a great career in music. One of my goals is to make a song with my hero Kendrick Lamar. When I get older I hope to make more bangers and spread the gospel, I am just getting started.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
For the most part its been a smooth road, I’ve had very supportive parents who are always helping me and coaching me.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I make music with my dad, I specialize in producing music, I hope one day I’m known for my music since I’m very proud of it, and what sets me apart from other people in my field is that I’m 14 making music that I think is up to par with rappers and produces who are two times my age.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I’ve always looked up to my dad and he’s always been my mentor. I think its important to seek out people that have experience in the field you need mentoring in, or ask a trusted family member for advice.
