We’re looking forward to introducing you to Sonia Grace. Check out our conversation below.
Sonia , it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I started doing crochet and it has been an amazing opportunity to learn a new skill. I use both the traditional needles and loom structures for my crafts. I love making things for my niece and nephew and hopefully one day I’ll teach them how to do it.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a Kenyan AfroBeats singer and songwriter who enjoys sharing the beauty and soul of Africa through music.
I just released the videos for “Thikka Boys” and “Mama Land,” both available on YouTube. I love these two songs because of how different they are—“Thikka Boys” celebrates body positivity and my hometown of Thika while “Mama Land”raises awareness for climate change. I hope to continue celebrating my African culture through art while educating others about issues that affect our world.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Lack of empathy creates division and breaks up relationships and communities. However, if one is willing to take the time to learn, there’s always a path to healing.
Is there something you miss that no one else knows about?
I miss cassette tapes. It feels hard to imagine that they were once the coolest thing in school but I wish they’d come back. I love the idea of owning a tangible part of my favorite song/ artist. Nothing against streaming services but with cassettes, I don’t have to worry about losing special songs if an app crashes or if the artist removes their music from streaming platforms.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
Language. Language is a significant part of human identity. It glues community together and gives people a sense of belonging.
To make sure I don’t lose my native tongue, Gikuyu, I sing & write in it, practice speaking and listen to other speakers.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
Not sleeping enough.
