Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Dan Moran of Downtown Los Angeles

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Dan Moran. Check out our conversation below.

Dan, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Of course, all three are vital. But of the three, integrity is non-negotiable. Without it, nothing else you say or do can be trusted.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a third generation diamond dealer and custom jeweler. I founded Concierge Diamonds to create a modern, highly personal jewelry experience for clients who want exceptional value with masterful craftsmanship. Working from my private, by-appointment offices in Downtown Los Angeles – and remotely with clients across the globe – my team and I specialize in creating custom, heirloom-quality pieces, with a particular focus on bespoke diamond engagement rings.

At Concierge Diamonds, I lead a talented team dedicated to making the design process seamless and enjoyable, whether you’re visiting us in LA or collaborating from anywhere in the world. Our work has been featured in major publications such as The New York Times, Vogue, Cosmopolitan, CNN, and Brides, and we’ve had the privilege of helping thousands of couples design the perfect ring. Our goal has always been to make creating truly exceptional jewelry a luxurious yet accessible experience.

I’m also a pilot, and own a small plane. One of my favorite things to do is to travel to clients homes, wherever they are, to work with them on their pieces. It lets me get insight into their lives and make the pieces even more special.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
My parents. They were in this business, working together, for 35 years. So not only did I learn about the jewelry business from them, but also how to run a business, how to build a family, and how to be a man. They’ve taught me countless lessons over the years, but one common sentence spoken in my house when I grew up resonates the most. “Good enough” isn’t good enough.

Words to live by.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
Fear of rejection. Much of my work can be characterized as sales. And every time I sit with a client, I wrestle with the demon on my shoulder, whispering, “this isn’t enough. They won’t like you.” But you gotta tell that fucker to shut his trap.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That demand will always be there. Yes, we have a storied past, and yes, there’s a bright future ahead – but not for everyone! If you take your eye off the ball for even a moment – if you forget to put your client first – you’re done.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
The personal relationships we’ve built. We aren’t “friendly” with our clients – we’re friends! I care about these people, and I’d like to think they care about me as well.
