Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaitlin Kearby.
Hi Kaitlin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up baking in the kitchen with my mother. Baking was her hobby, and she taught me that gifting homemade treats for birthdays/holidays was the most sincere. In 2018 I enrolled in the baking program at LATTC. Around the same time I was shifting my vegetarian diet to mostly vegan, and began experimenting with vegan baked goods. In 2020
I slowly started marketing myself as a vegan home baker, and now I bake 100% vegan & gluten-free items out of my apartment in Koreatown.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Unfortunately baking doesn’t pay all my bills, so I work full time waiting tables at a restaurant in Los Feliz. Some days I work all day, then come home and bake all night. It can be pretty tiring, but I still love it and find baking so rewarding.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a home baker who specializes in 100% vegan & gluten-free desserts. Most of the items I bake are also nut-free; I cater to lots of different allergies. Donuts (large & mini) are my most popular item. But I bake everything from cookies, cakes, loaves, brownies, cupcakes, pies, etc. All of my goods are baked with my homemade blend of gluten-free flour, which makes everything moist and tender. Most people say they can’t even tell that my treats are vegan & gluten-free! That is the best compliment.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I’m constantly researching recipes from veteran vegan or gluten-free bakers. My current obsession is “The Elements of Baking” by Katarina Cermelj. She is scientist turned gluten-free baker, and wrote this fantastic book that helps translate & convert any recipe to vegan or gluten-free. It’s my bible.
