Kai Fischer shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Kai, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: When was the last time you felt true joy?
With LAMBADA THE DANCE OF FATE earning over 100 awards & selections across five continents and ranks as the most awarded biographical screenplay by a first-time screenwriter in history — I am honored by how deeply this story has resonated around the globe. The last time I felt true joy was therefore each moment I received the news that my screenplay had earned another award or festival selection. Not because of the trophies themselves, but because people—strangers from countries and cultures I have never visited—were recognizing the heart, the labor, and the truth behind this story. There is something profoundly moving about knowing that your work has crossed borders and touched lives you will never meet in person. That feeling filled me with a sense of joy that was both humbling and deeply real.
But beyond the accolades, my purpose has always been larger than recognition. Cinema, for me, has never been just entertainment—it is a gateway to empathy. It is one of the few universal languages capable of dissolving distance, inviting understanding, and reminding us that our humanity is shared. As storytellers, we carry the extraordinary privilege—and the responsibility—of holding up a mirror to the world.
With my biographical film project, my ambition is to leave a meaningful imprint on the genre by telling a story that is emotionally resonant, historically grounded, and authentically human. I want to create a film that lingers with audiences long after the credits roll, one that sparks conversations, stirs compassion, and encourages people to look at each other with a little more understanding. If this film can inspire even one moment of reflection or connection, then every step of this journey has been worth it.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m an award-winning screenwriter driven by a single mission: to give voice to untold and overlooked stories — stories that matter, stories that reveal truth, and stories that carry emotional and historical weight. I believe there are two defining days in every life: the day we’re born, and the day we discover why. I’ve found my ‘why.’ My purpose is not only to tell meaningful stories, but also to illuminate a path for others who are still searching for theirs.
My work is rooted in empathy and authenticity, guided by the belief that cinema is one of the most powerful bridges between cultures, generations, and lived experiences. As I have already mentioned over the past year, my screenplay LAMBADA THE DANCE OF FATE has received extraordinary international recognition — more than 107 awards across five continents, including top honors from the Film Emmy Awards 2025, the Independent Golden Globe, the Independent Oscar Awards, the Film Grammy Awards, and the Cinematic Tony Awards of Broadway. In addition, I had the honor of receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award twice in India for my contribution towards world cinema. It has been celebrated in the categories of Best Biographical Script and Best International Screenwriter.
What makes my work unique is my focus on true stories that reveal the humanity behind the headlines. LAMBADA THE DANCE OF FATE uncovers the real, largely unknown story of Loalwa Braz Vieira — the legendary voice of Kaoma and the woman behind the global hit “La Lambada.” Her voice was once among the most recognized on the planet, yet few know the truth: that the music was plagiarized, that she never received the recognition she deserved, and that her life ended in a tragic and mysterious way. My film explores the adversity, destiny, and injustice that shaped her journey.
One of the most powerful scenes takes place on the night the Berlin Wall fell, when thousands of people from both East and West Germany danced the Lambada together — strangers united in freedom, joy, and release. In that moment, the dance becomes more than music; it becomes a symbol of liberation and the first breath of a new era. This is the kind of storytelling that inspires me: connecting the personal to the global, showing how one woman’s voice and one cultural phenomenon influenced generations.
Looking ahead, my brand remains anchored in emotional truth, cultural resonance, and the courage to tell stories others overlook. LAMBADA THE DANCE OF FATE is only the beginning. My goal is to create a body of work that leaves a meaningful imprint on cinema — stories that stay with audiences not because they shouted the loudest, but because they whispered something their hearts could not ignore.
With my arrangements, I am not only active behind the camera but also as a background actor in front of the camera. So far, I have worked in various German, English, and American film productions. This includes the Paramount+ production of “Lioness” alongside Nicole Kidman, Morgan Freeman, Zoe Saldaña, and Laysla de Oliviera. We are currently shooting a German feature film, “DER PERFEKTE URLAUB” (The Perfect Vacation), which will be released in German cinemas in 2026.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
The people who have taught me the most about work as a filmmaker are creators whose careers embody courage, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to storytelling. Three of my greatest role models are Quentin Tarantino, Francis Ford Coppola and Steven Spielberg. All of them began with nothing more than a dream and an unmistakable passion for cinema. Spielberg’s early story has always stayed with me: as a young boy on one of the first Universal Studios tours, he simply stepped off the tram and wandered the studio lot on his own. Because he was just a kid, no one questioned him. It’s a humorous memory, but also a powerful reminder that boldness, curiosity, and initiative can open doors that seem impossible.
Another major influence on my work ethic is Arnold Schwarzenegger. He is one of the rare individuals who achieved extraordinary success in every field he entered—bodybuilding, film, and politics. His relentless discipline, his ability to reinvent himself, and his refusal to accept limitations continue to inspire me. Through his example, I’ve learned that passion must be matched with perseverance, and that growth often comes from daring to step into unfamiliar territory.
I actually met him twice at Gold’s Gym Venice. When I asked for a pic with him, he just tapped me on the shoulder and said, dry and firm: “Do your workout first!”
I knew instantly he wasn’t just talking about the training—and I couldn’t help but laugh.
For the record, I still haven’t washed that shoulder …
Together, these role models have taught me that great work requires courage, consistency, and the willingness to carve your own path—no matter how unconventional it may be.
Do you remember a time someone truly listened to you?
Yes — one of the most meaningful moments in my career happened recently, when I had the privilege of presenting my biopic film project to several Hollywood production companies in Los Angeles. In this industry, you don’t simply walk into Paramount or any major studio and ask if someone has a moment to talk. Access must be earned slowly, through trust, relationships, and credibility built up by carefully opening one door after another.
What made these meetings so significant to me was not just the opportunity, but the feeling that people were genuinely listening. The many awards and international selections my screenplay has received played a vital role in making that possible. They were the reason people in Hollywood stopped, took notice, and decided my story was worth their time and attention.
Every year, tens of thousands of new screenplays circulate through Hollywood. Most of them never reach a single executive, let alone decision-makers. To have my work move from being just another script in circulation to being presented in real conversations — conversations where people leaned in, asked questions, and truly engaged with the story — is something I value deeply. It told me that the emotional truth behind my work was resonating beyond borders.
That experience reminded me why I do what I do. Being truly listened to is not just about having someone hear your words — it’s about having someone understand your passion, your vision, and your purpose. In those situations, I felt seen not just as a writer, but as a storyteller with something meaningful to say. And that, to me, is one of the greatest affirmations any artist can receive.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
As a filmmaker, I am deeply committed to seeing my biographical film project LAMBADA THE DANCE OF FATE brought to the screen — no matter how long it takes or other obstacles I would have to overcome. Some stories arrive before their moment, and the world needs time to catch up to them. I believe in this project with absolute conviction, and I’m prepared to dedicate as much time as necessary to make sure it is created with the right team, the right talent, and the right cultural moment.
Hollywood history itself reminds us that timing can be everything. One of the greatest examples is the screenplay for the movie THE BODYGUARD. Lawrence Kasdan wrote it in the mid-1970s, then being rejected 67 times, finally bought by Warner Bros in 1977 and for fifteen years it stayed in a drawer — waiting for the right zeitgeist, the right musical landscape, and ultimately the perfect pairing of Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston. Only then did the project become the iconic global phenomenon we know today. It wasn’t abandoned. It was simply waiting for its moment.
I feel the same way about LAMBADA THE DANCE OF FATE. My commitment doesn’t waver because I know the story is powerful. The timing for biopics has never been better — audiences are hungry for real stories, emotional truth, and cultural history. The music is already set, the narrative resonates deeply, and industry professionals have suggested incredible casting ideas that would elevate the film even further. Dua Lipa as Plan A for the lead role, and Karol G the Colombian singer and songwriter as Plan B, would bring not only extraordinary star power but also global appeal, musical credibility, and the emotional strength this role demands.
To me, a filmmaker’s job is not to rush a story into existence, but to shepherd it patiently until all the right elements align. This story deserves the perfect moment, and I am committed to it — heart, mind, and soul — for as long as it takes to make that moment real.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
When I’m gone, I hope people remember me as someone who dedicated his life to giving voice to the stories that might otherwise have remained unheard. From a very young age, I felt a deep pull toward storytelling. I fell in love with books and movies early in childhood — I remember watching Spielberg’s E.T. with my parents and friends, and two years later seeing The NeverEnding Story. I was just eleven years old, growing up in Frankfurt, Germany, but in those moments, something awakened in me. I understood, even then, that stories have the power to shape us, comfort us, and connect us.
That passion followed me into adulthood. In 2019, my first book ICH GLAUB, ICH KRIEG NEN VOGEL was published in Germany, followed by my second book PROMIGEFLÜSTER MALLORCA three years later. Each project strengthened my belief that storytelling isn’t just something I do — it’s who I am. And it is also the way I hope to leave my footprint on this planet.
If there is a story people tell about me after I’m gone, I hope it is this: that I was a storyteller who refused to let meaningful stories fade into silence. Someone who believed that every voice deserves to be heard, especially the voices history forgets.
Bringing LAMBADA THE DANCE OF FATE to the big screen is a central part of that mission. I believe in this story with every fiber of my being. It carries emotional truth, historical resonance, and the legacy of a woman whose voice once united the world — yet whose real story has never been fully told. Although no final decision on a producer or production company has been made yet, I remain patient, focused, and open to the right creative partnership. Every serious offer is welcome, and I am eager to connect with producers who see the cinematic potential in this untold true story.
Ultimately, the legacy I want to leave is simple: that I told stories that mattered. That I honored the people behind them. And that, through my work, I made the world just a little more empathetic, a little more connected, and a little more understanding. If people remember me for that, then my footprint on this planet will have been exactly the one I hoped to leave.
