Meet Indigenous Cats of Los Angeles County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Indigenous Cats.

Hi Indigenous Cats, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
We are an Underground Hip Hop Duo known as Indigenous Cats, also know as Calmplx and INA. We have been making music together since 2018. We actually grew up in the same town and went the same high school but it wasn’t till after high school that our lives began to merge. Our relationship together as a couple has always been a huge strength in our musical journey as Indigenous Cats. We believe that having a strong foundation in loving one another has made our music that much more real and authentic. It hasn’t always been easy but through the difficult times of learning and growing, it has always been worth every minute. Our similarities in music and cultural practices have definitely paved our direction for Indigenous Cats. It is very important for both of us to be on our own spiritual path as well as together. As Indigenous Cats we strive to help the world heal and decolonize from colonialism through the lyrics we write. We hope our message continues to reach people all over the world.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Our struggles have never been easy. We both have face extremely traumatizing childhoods that led us on a path seeking deep healing. Music came to us as a way to transmute internal pain into art. As well as a way to channel all that pain and anger and create something that could potentially help others through their own struggles.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We are a music group that blends Underground Hip Hop, soul, Boom Bap, Conscious lyricism and spirituality together. We are proud that our music has resonated with people of all colors and continues to uplift and inspire those effected by systematic corruption. We have been heavily inspired and influenced by live performances and find most of joy sharing our music live. Along side our music we also have a clothing line called ‘Indigenous State Of Mind’. As artists, we are always finding new ways to channel our creativity. ‘Indigenous State Of Mind’ is a way to represent our cultural backgrounds through the symbols on each piece of clothing. Overall our mission is to be a voice for the people and light a fire inside the hearts of those oppressed.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
We are both extremely family orientated and acknowledge we wouldn’t be where we are without the women in both of our lives. Our mothers, Grandmothers, sisters, Tias and Titas, they have all played a role in who we are today. We also would not be where we are today without all the support we have received from people along the way!
