Conversations with Andrew Sanchez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Sanchez.

Hi Andrew, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been obsessed with movies since I was a kid. My dream was always to become a film director. Growing up, my friends and I would make goofy short films, we’d write them, shoot them, edit them, and then show them around school like they were big premieres.

After high school, I went to community college, and around that time I started filming weddings on the weekends. My first clients were literally family members who knew I liked cameras. Pretty soon, every weekend was packed with weddings and quinceañeras. From there, things took off. I started shooting content for real estate agents, lawyers, financial firms, pilates studios… honestly, anyone who needed video.

Little by little I built up a solid client list, and eventually I made the jump and dropped out of college to go all-in on freelance videography. Right now I’m shifting from mostly social media content to working on professional sets films, music videos, commercials and it feels like everything I dreamed about as a kid is finally starting to line up.

I feel super lucky to do something I genuinely love. Not everyone gets that, and I don’t take a second of it for granted.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My path to where I am now definitely wasn’t smooth. The first thing that comes to mind is the stress that comes with going all in on yourself. It’s terrifying to drop out of college, quit your job, and chase something without knowing if it’ll actually work out. Back then, I constantly felt like I was one mistake away from failing. And on top of that, I worried about letting down the people around me who didn’t really understand what I was trying to do.

There were plenty of moments when imposter syndrome hit hard, honestly, it still does sometimes. And there were months where work slowed down and I questioned everything. But looking back, taking that leap was the best decision I’ve ever made.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in freelance videography. Most of the time, I’m creating social media content for all kinds of businesses that need it. I also work as a freelance cinematographer, which basically means I team up with the director to bring the script to life visually, everything from camera to lighting. It’s a leadership role on set, and it’s something I’ve really grown to love.

People I’ve worked with usually describe me as reliable, and I take a lot of pride in that. What sets my work apart is the level of quality I try to bring to every project. Clients always tell me how good their videos look, and it means a lot to know I can deliver something that feels cinematic, no matter the size of the job.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
My relationship with risk has definitely changed since I first started. I’ve never really thought of myself as a big risk-taker. Honestly, it took me months to finally drop out of college, even though I was already overwhelmed, shooting gigs every weekend, trying to keep up with classes, and working another job on top of that. When I finally decided to focus on freelancing full-time, I had no idea if I was making the right call.

Looking back now, that was a huge risk for me, but it was also the smartest one I could’ve taken. I chose to chase something I was both good at and passionate about, and it’s led to a career with a ceiling that keeps rising. If I ever face another big decision down the road, I feel way more prepared now to make the right choice.
