Exploring Life & Business with Alison Johnson of Insightful Matters Family Counseling Professionals, Inc. and Insightful Resources

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alison Johnson.

Hi Alison, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Insightful Matters actually began as my solo practice back in 2011, when I started working as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. From the beginning, my focus was simply on supporting my clients as thoughtfully and compassionately as I could. Over time, word spread, and I built a reputation for providing effective, client-centered care. Before long, the practice had grown through referrals to the point where I had more clients than I could manage alone.

In 2013, I realized it was time to expand. I began bringing on therapists who not only had strong clinical skills but also shared my commitment to warm, high-quality care. Today, Insightful Matters has become a diverse team that includes both experienced Licensed Clinicians and Associate Therapists, along with Medication Management Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners who offer additional layers of support. Our team provides therapy in six languages, meets clients weekly, in person in Huntington Beach and Anaheim, and serves clients across California through Telehealth. We’re also in network with most major insurance plans, because keeping therapy accessible is incredibly important to us.

That passion for accessibility led me to open our nonprofit, Insightful Resources, in 2021. Through the nonprofit, we’re able to offer sliding-scale services and ensure that cost isn’t a barrier to care. Insightful Resources also serves as a training site for student therapists, which allows us to support the next generation of mental health professionals.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Owning a business definitely comes with its share of challenges. From the beginning, it was really important to me that therapy be accessible, which meant contracting with insurance companies. Anyone who’s been through that process knows it can be time-consuming and complicated. Every insurance company has its own rules, rates, and requirements, so my team and I are constantly working to balance high-quality care and steady growth while navigating those limitations.

With Insightful Resources, our nonprofit, we’re still in the early stages, so securing grants has been another learning curve. It takes time to build relationships, demonstrate impact, and meet all the requirements that come with grant funding. But, my team and I are committed to continuing to grow both sites.

We’ve been impressed with Insightful Matters Family Counseling Professionals, Inc. and Insightful Resources , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Insightful Matters and Insightful Resources have both grown into incredibly diverse teams, and I’m really proud of what we’ve built. Having clinicians from a variety of backgrounds allows us to serve a wide range of clients, from children as young as three to adults, and provide culturally sensitive care. We treat a broad spectrum of challenges, including ADHD, depression, anxiety, substance misuse, complicated grief, disordered eating, postpartum depression, low self-esteem, and more. Our goal is always to help clients gain the tools they need to make real, lasting improvements in their mental health.

We offer individual, couples, and family sessions, using a variety of evidence-based approaches such as DBT, CBT, EMDR, Internal Family Systems, Gottman Method, and more. One thing I’m especially proud of is how collaborative our team is. If a clinician completes an intake and feels a client would be better served by someone else on the team, we can ensure a smooth transition with a coordinated treatment plan. This is another way we try to prioritize both access to care and quality of care. Our team truly strives to be reliable and always keeps client care at the center of what we do.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I think, for us, success really means having a team of clinicians who are not only skilled and compassionate but also collaborative and committed to client-centered care. It’s about creating an environment where every client feels seen, supported, and empowered to make real progress in their mental health journey. Success also means continuing to grow and expand access to care so that more people in our community can get the support they need, while maintaining the quality and integrity of the services we provide.
