Life & Work with Carter Dau of North County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carter Dau.

Hi Carter, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Thanks for having me again VoyageLa. Since we last spoke, I have been really busy. I have done a number of short films, and a couple of Proof of Concepts, which I am now attached to and are in the pre-production stages of becoming feature films. I am also in early stages for a TV Series, which I am really, really excited about and I have a Chemistry Read coming up for a big feature film.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I mentioned last year that visa restrictions had kept me from some pretty incredible roles, working alongside some of the biggest people in the industry, and since then, a few more really exciting, very big opportunities have come up that I wasn’t able to take. It’s definitely been frustrating, but it also shows how much people are noticing my work and I’m excited for what’s next. It’s tough, but I’m just focused on making the most of the opportunities I can take.

What it has taught me is how to be resilient and gain a thorough understanding of the industry and just how difficult it can be.
I truly believe I am right where I need to be and timing is everything. I know I want longevity in the industry and it is the only thing I want to do for the rest of my life, so I am grateful for all the learning lessons along the way. So I am keeping busy, writing, acting, and learning and taking every opportunity that comes my way.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I feel so grateful that I have had the opportunity to get in front of some amazing, inspirational people in the industry and I like to think I am doing everything I need to do to hit the ground running when I finally get my O-1 Visa. I am appreciative that people like Ron Howard, have seen my work and believe I am good enough to be in one of his films. He is one of the people I aspire to be like as he has is so well respected and I have heard, one of the nicest people in the industy
I am proud of the fact that nearly every audition I have gets me a callback, a directors session, or a booking, so it gives me the confidence I need to keep going and know I am right there. I have persevered and kept going, despite the setbacks, knowing that as soon as I am able to work here, there will be nothing stopping me. I am even more determined than ever.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Even though I am only 15 I have been brought up to understand how important it is to respect people and treat everyone well. I am quite introverted so it will never be easy for me to network for the sake of meeting people to get somewhere. That isn’t who I am. I truly want to be around likeminded people who are respectful, kind, hard working and want to give back. I know when the time comes, I will always try and help people starting out so they feel supported.
I think authentic relationships will always be the best way to connect with people on an emotional level.
As far as mentors go, I feel you can learn something from everyone you meet. Everyone has something to teach you, be it positive or negative. I like to take a lesson from most people. I am constantly reading and watching interviews, podcasts, and continue to read books from people I find inspirational. They are my mentors.
