Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric Chacon.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I began my musical path at a very young age, growing up in a third-generation family of musicians who deeply influenced my early connection to the art. My formal training started in the renowned Venezuelan System of Orchestras, under the leadership of maestro José Antonio Abreu, where I developed as an academic musician. During those years, I specialized in flute performance and later completed a bachelor’s degree in music, experiences that shaped the foundation of my technical and artistic formation.
As my career evolved, I expanded my curiosity beyond the classical world and ventured into popular music, exploring genres such as jazz, folk, and Latin music. This transition led me to study saxophone and immerse myself in various musical disciplines that broadened my creative language and strengthened my versatility as a performer, composer, and arranger.
These combined influences and years of study allowed me to forge my own artistic identity. I have since dedicated myself fully to my professional career, developing a body of work that reflects my cultural roots, academic background, and contemporary musical explorations. To date, I have recorded eight solo albums and four EPs, each one representing a different stage of my evolution as an artist and a continual search for new sounds and expressions.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like everything in life, music comes with its highs and lows. In many ways, it resembles sports: you must practice constantly, push your limits, and often face environments that feel competitive. This can lead to moments of frustration. In my case, I experienced some of those challenges during my teenage years, when the pressure to excel and the desire to belong weighed heavily on me.
Now, as an adult, my challenges have evolved. They are no longer about proving myself in the traditional sense, but rather about the ongoing search for my own musical voice—a personal language that I have been shaping over many years. At times, I find myself questioning whether this unique sound I am building truly reaches people in the way I hope. Yet I continue forward, driven by the need to express something different, something genuine.
This pursuit of individuality is not only reflected in the way I play my instruments, but also in the melodies I compose. My goal is always to create music that speaks with authenticity, that carries a distinctive character, and that resonates emotionally with those who listen. Even when doubts appear, I remain committed to refining this voice, because it represents who I am and everything I have learned along my musical journey.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
1. What do you do?
“I am a flutist, saxophonist, and composer.”
2. What do you specialize in?
“I specialize in creating my own music and performing in different projects, especially those focused on creativity and improvisation.”
3. What are you known for?
“I am known for my albums and for playing several wind instruments.”
4. What are you most proud of?
“What makes me most proud is being able to grow my career while watching my daughters grow. Having a family and pursuing my artistic path are the two things I dedicate myself to with equal intensity.”
5. What sets you apart from others?
“What sets me apart is that, when I play, I strive to express my own voice. I stopped imitating others many years ago.”
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Something surprising that most people—especially here in the United States—don’t know about me is that my main instrument is actually the classical flute, and that I performed on many tours with Gustavo Dudamel. At the same time, many people from the classical world would never imagine that I have been dedicated to popular saxophone playing for many years. And as a fun fact, I’ve been addicted to golf for the past 15 years.”
