Today we’d like to introduce you to JT & Debbie Moye’.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
We started our journey as husband and wife who managed separated businesses here in LA but hardly saw each other. We took a long walk on the beach to discuss a plan to start a business and be together most of our golden years. We came up with gymnastics with a twist… Ninja Warrior Obstacle Course Training. 10 years later we have our own Ninja gym and we love every minute of it. After the last 4 Covid years in the public parks in Culver City, we finally have 4 walls to serve families for camps, classes and birthday parties. And they are like no other around. Dynamic, fun and entertaining for kids and parents alike.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Some may call it struggles but we say Obstacles. We teach kids how to manage obstacles in the gym as well as in life. We had to find places to rent space, we had to pivot during Covid but never stopped, so many obstacles that come with occupying a public park – you can only imaging. Our U-Haul was stolen or broken into 4 times in one summer, we were rained on during birthday parties, but we kept on stepping. No excuses or complaints, we just had to keep going until the right place came along. And now we couldn’t be happier.
One of our best decisions was to join the Culver City Chamber of Commerce to use a business resource. The staff was so supportive that the President (2020) came with us to look at commercial properties for our business. We found a realtor, a business lawyer, an architect and a professor in a UC school of business, do a focus group and analyze our company to help us see where we stood as a viable business. With our support team, we found a way over, under around or through any obstacles that came our way. And with a partner like Debbie, I felt like we can conquer anything. It’s all for the children. Everything Counts for Kids. EC Kids
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Debbie and I are creative masterminds separately but together it’s a never-ending storm of electric creativity. Debbie organized events and Holiday celebrations in Arizona for years before we met. Hundreds of families would attend Easter Hunts, Stuff the Bus Christmases for underprivilege kids and mock Fear Factor game days for the neighborhood.
I have been performing most of my life and received a BFA in Acting from the University of Connecticut before teaching Jazz dance, going on National tours (Grover Sesame Street Live and Miss Saigon). While in LA I landed a series regular on Fox Kids Club’s Rimba’s Island (Pria the Elephant). After performing in almost 3,000 performances of a Marine and Featured Dragon Acrobat on Broadway, I returned to LA working as a gym manager and Camp Director and Stunt Coordinator for Honeynut Cheerios, The Rolling Stones tour and Kids Say the Darndest Things with Tiffany Haddish on CBS.
Once Debbie and I put our heads together, we became an unstoppable force for kids to have their Best Day Ever at Ninja with EC Kids
How do you define success?
We believe if we can help one child feel more confident and good about themselves every day, then we are a success. Also, if you are truly happy doing what you love – that’s a huge success. DO things your way and whenever it’s not fun anymore, make a change or stop doing it.
