Today we’d like to introduce you to Austin Hayman.
Hi Austin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I painted a lot as a child. But, around the age of twelve I became really invested in music. I took several stabs at painting as an adult but never gave myself a real shot at it. I didn’t allow myself the space to make enough bad paintings to get over the hump. I did always know I had it in me though. About 4 years ago I went for it and now painting is a primary aspect of my life. I think about it at all times.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s surely a bumpy road for anyone in the arts. Every piece is a brand new struggle. I’ll have ideas and plans that don’t work but I rarely abandon a piece. I think one of my strongest suits is damage control and I can usually find my way back.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I consider myself a narrative figure painter. I love painting people but not just a portrait, I am really interested in setting a scene and quietly constructing a story within the work. It’s always interesting to hear how other perceive it, everyone does differently. The aspect of my work that I think its most unique is the color palette I use. I’ve gotten it fairly narrowed down and I think it makes the work recognizable and that’s an important aspect.
What matters most to you? Why?
Enjoying the process. The process is the whole point. That’s your life.
